We will meet at the Abalone Cove Parking lot.  Parking here is $5.

5970 Palos Verdes Dr.
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275

From the parking lot it's a short hike down to the water where we'll make our way around a cliff and onto the first cove.  Once there, you must jump into the channel carved into the rock by the crashing waves in order to get across and to a lagoon which forms beautiful tide pools full of marine life when the tide is low.  The tide is scheduled to be low during our event.

You Will Get wet!

You do need to know how to swim (at least a little).

Once we get our fill here it's on to the next, bigger, cove and you guessed it, we need to jump in again to get across.

Our last time there (as a UA event) this is far as we got.  Recently, I discovered that there are two more bigger coves beyond this, so that is our destination on this trip.

The day is long and the coves are just part of the adventure.  There are secluded, sandy beaches along the way where we can hang out and relax too.  So if you go past the first cove, but maybe don't feel too adventurous to go beyond that, don't worry.  Hang out, relax, catch some waves, or some crabs, or some uni (sea urchin) and catch the group on their way back.

  • Please wear clothes to get wet in.
  • Please wear some old shoes with sturdy grip, or river shoes to get wet in.  Absolutely no flip flops or bare feet allowed.  Vans and Converse are OK, but I find them a little slippery when walking on wet/underwater rocks.
  • We will not stop for you to change, change your shoes, etc...  How you leave your car is how you're going in.
  • Leave your cell phones in the car.  They are useless down there and you run the risk of  getting them wet.
  • If you are going to bring any electronics with you, like a camera, please bring a ziplock or some sort of water tight bag.  Keep in mind that you will need to throw anything you have with you, such as a backpack, across the coves.  Whether it makes it or not depends on how good you throw ;).

Please remember that organizers are untrained volunteers and all events are at your own risk.

Bring a lunch and some snacks to share and we'll picnic before heading out.

Please give us a call if you are lost or running late so  that we know to wait for you.

Great hike. Had a blast even though I was one of the early ones to depart. Thanks to Ed & Howard for setting this up!

This was a sicko event. I had the greatest time - just beyond. The sea hares, valerie and mike's awesome eco/marine bio knowledge, the jumping off of and scrambling back up rock walls and the incredibly beautiful day it turned into made me glad to be alive and especially glad to be living in so cal. Thanks Howard!

    •  WOW! I was totally blown away by the sea life in the tide pools. I had never seen a real live starfish, let alone hold one in my hand. There were hundreds of them all happily clustered together on the rocks. Gorgeous colors. Loved this day, great crowd, thanks Howard and Eddie for organizing such a memorable event.
    •  You all that missed the event -what can I say, you missed a great event. Those that got cold and left early, well, you missed the sun, and you'll just have to check out our pictures. Thanks for coming out though, glad you made it as far as you did. Join us again next time, we'll guarantee more awesome sights.
    •  We started out, chilly, over cast and with a hurricane swell that had the coast guard keep us off from the first two coves. We hiked around to get to the other two coves and was proud to see everyone jump in like champs! Some people got a little cold after that and left, which was a shame since they left jsut as the sun came up and tide went down. The few of us that stayed went back around through the first two coves which we missed on the way in. The high tide earlier in the day dragged in all kinds of cool little creatures and the tide pools were bustling with marine life. Truly one of the awesomest outings yet, especially with marine biology conoseurs like Mike and Valerie to school us on what we were seeing. Even saw a sun star which I didn't even know existed. How cool is that? My camera gota little wet and stopped working early on in the event so hopefully some of those that managed to keep their cameras dry will share some of their pics with us.
    •  What an awesome afternoon! The sealife in the tidepools was CRAZY! Schools of baby fish, huge anemones, skittering crabs, sun stars, and of course the sea hares (think of a fat foot long slug) were the big highlight for me. It's really too bad that most of the group missed out on going back around the first set of tidepools - it was by far the best part of the day.
    •  I got there pretty late but was lucky enough to experience, as Mike calls it (which I love!), the "fat foot long slugs" which were so awesome to see and touch, thanks Howard! Also too, lots of beautiful starfish and sea crabs scattered throughout. Sun came out in no time to warm us all up. Glad I made it out. Thanks Ed & Howard for a fun day.
    •  BEYOND. Best meet up ever, bar none. To those of you that didn't make it and/or left early, like Howard said - you missed out SO hard. We can, however, do it again sometime soon.
