Two Hollywood Icons, One Hike

  • Apr 16, 2011 · 10:00 AM

What's more iconic in Hollywood than the Hollywood sign?  Not even Oscar himself.

So let's go on a hike to the Hollywood sign, and as an added bonus we'll stop by the Bronson Caves, better known as the "Bat Caves" where the Batmobile is often seen racing out of in the 1960's TV show.

Keep in mind that while we'll be pretty close to the sign, it is fenced off, and surveilled by cameras so trespass at your own risk.  The caves, however, are wide open and we'll be able to walk through them and explore to your hearts content.

Distance: 6.5 miles, round trip
Elevation Gain: 1098 feet

While this is considered a moderate hike, be advised that the hike up to the sign is on a consistent, mild incline.  So while it doesn't seem bad at first, it will tire you quite a bit as we continue up.  Be prepared to sweat.  The trail is also mostly without shade so prepare yourself, dress appropriately and bring sun screen.

The forecast calls for weather in the mid 70's this Saturday so make sure you bring plenty of water.

Bring snacks to get you through the hike and some cash so we can grab some lunch and a celebratory cold beverage or two afterwards.

Although hot and a bit strenuous, gorgeous day to make the climb to the sign, especially if you've never been! The view from the top was well worth it...and last but not least, fish & shrimp tacos -- yummy reward! :)

This hike was a little tougher than we expected, and the weather was a littler hotter than expected too. None the less, it was good time. Recommend it to all, natives or transplants, who have not hike to the sign.

Bring a hat if you have one because it's going to be sunny and the road doesn't have much shade.

Anyone near Garden Grove, Westminster, or Huntington Beach that wants to carpool?
