Still looking for plans for 4th of July weekend? Well, you just found them.Derald
is setting up a camping trip with some friends on 4th of July weekend and he was kind enough to invite some UA'ers along.
Any questions about this event, please direct toward Derald.
You are invited to a camping trip for the Fourth of July Weekend up in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, a mere 200 miles from downtown LA.
The trip is in the Sequoia National Monument, not the National Park. What?s the difference? Where we are going is devoid of the mass crowds you are sure to expect at the National Park, especially on a holiday weekend. But you still get all the beauty and of course multiple groves of Sequoia trees. And you can bring dogs on the trails where we are going, so Rufus is invited too.
The campground itself is in a pristine pine forest right next to a meadow. It is listed in several camping books as one of the best in California. I?ve been going for a few years and love the place.
Camping Equipment ? I have all the cooking ware and basic supplies needed for camping. All you need to bring is your tent, sleeping bag, flashlight etc. If you have more equipment go ahead and bring it. But it?s not necessary as I am a pretty proficient camper and have what?s needed.
Meals ? I realize people wake up at different times and may want to do different things throughout the day. Thus please bring something you can eat, or share, for breakfast and lunch. But we will be cooking breakfast and probably making sandwiches for lunch. I do ask that we all eat dinner and dessert together at night. I am ready, able and willing to cook dinner but will be asking people to bring side dishes to eat. Culinary contributions will be appreciated!
Activities ? there are plenty of options as there so much beauty to absorb. Here are some of the things you can look forward to:
Hiking ? there are several hikes in the area. Some are very short (less than 1/2 mile) and have tremendous beauty for minimal effort, such as Dome Rock and Trail of 100 Giants. I will lead a hike that is 4-5 miles as well to take us either to Needle Point (a fire lookout over the Golden Trout Wilderness) or to the Forks of the Kern River.
Sequoia Trees ? if you have never seen them then you are missing out on a California treasure.
Waterfalls ? I know a spot where we can hike and get behind a beautiful waterfall. There are also a few cascades that kick ass!
Natural Waterslides ? I know a few spots where you can slide down polished rock on the river/waterfall. More fun than Raging Waters!
Swimming Pools ? the natural kind ? There are several natural swimming pools to clean off and relax in.
The Milky Way - Imagine being under the stars, soaking in the Milky Way, watching shooting stars every night. The campsite is at 7000? elevation and gives you an excellent celestial view.
Price - $30. This covers the site reservations and plus some of the food and supplies. I have three sites reserved for the trip.
There is a general store 5 minutes away by car with a clean bathroom to use and plenty of cold drinks and supplies.
Monday July 5 is a work holiday. I?ll be driving up the morning of Friday July 2 and leaving Monday July 5. You are free to come and leave as your schedule dictates. We will work on carpools once I hear from people regarding their schedules.
Feel free to email me with questions.
