Over twenty years ago, the Utne Reader -- known as the "Reader's Digest" of the left -- put out a solicitation where they offered to connect people who wanted to form discussion groups, modeled on the old "Salon" style groups, in their own communities. A number of us responded to this solicitation, and an "Utne Salon" was born. Many Salons were born at that time, but ours is one of the few still remaining and active.
However, we're getting older every year and it's time for our group to revitalize, especially with some younger members. Our topics of discussion are as varied as possible, and some past topics over the last couple of years have included:
- Beyond the Abrahamic Faiths
- Books we love and why
- Changes in Higher Education
- Dark & Light/Happiness Project
- Divorce & Breakups
- Greatest Places to Live or Visit
- Humor - Was it that we find funny?
- Sports Teams We Love and Hate
- Supreme Court Decisions
- The Astrological Viewpoint
- The Mind-Body Connection
- The Influence of China
- The New Positive Psychology
- What Makes Things Funny
- The Changing Face of News
- Who Are Our Heroes (And Are They Still Relevant)
We generally meet on the first Monday of every month at one of our members' homes. Although originally centered in Newton/Watertown, the geography of our members has expanded over time, and we now have members in Arlington, Jamaica Plain, Brookline, Littleton, and other towns inside the MetroWest 495 belt. But most of the meetings do take place in the Newton, Watertown, Arlington triangle. Hosts provide light refreshments, and meetings typically last from 7:30 to 9:30 (with us gathering at 7:15). Please note also that while the general slant of the group is politically progressive, this is not a political group, and all political opinions are welcome.
Please note also that MOST OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GROUP ARE NOT PART OF MEETUP. We usually have about a half dozen going, so if there are six Meetup members coming, that means that these are in addition to the non-meetup membership.
