Photo Walk No. 3: Asheville River Arts District (on a Saturday)

Following up our urban explorations of Downtown Asheville along the Urban Trail, it's time to get creative in the city's renowned creative neighborhood:  The River Arts District.

There will be plenty of architecture and color to capture, and we may even come across a few artists at work.  This will be a casual stroll starting at the end of Depot Street, and then we'll see how much ground we can cover.

This event will take place from 10am to about 1pm.  It will also be offered on a weekday afternoon (Tuesday, April 6, from 3pm to 6pm).

We ask that, in order to keep numbers down, and to prevent the need to put a cap on numbers, folks sign up for only one of the two RAD events.  Thanks!

See you in May!

Great companions, great weather, and a little adventure on the Thunderoad Bridge (old Haywood). Luckily, none of us made it to jail.

David, actually I was referring to a 'character' we met up on Park Avenue North, near the Thunder Road bridge, who threatened us that the poolize were sure to come get us as we had used a (completely un-marked) metal stairway to get from Roberts Street to the bridge. After I chatted with him for awhile he calmed down, and had quite a few things to say about the neighborhood since 1949(!), including that we were looking down on old Haywood Road, and that the bridge had appeared in Robert Mitchum's Thunder Road. But if you do plan on getting arrested for a higher cause, be sure to let us know so we can photo-document it.

Ha! I think we'll save the "arrests" for a special photo walk, Michael. Would you be interested in taking the lead on that one? ;-)

I know I haven't even been to one of these events yet, but I am thinking I would be willing to initiate another gathering beyond the 2 per month planned.
For example, I have been going to the Biltmore Estate a lot (I have an annual pass), not to the house but wandering around the gardens and hiking trails. I think I can bring people in on my pass after 5:30 (evening hours, setting sun = golden light!). There are nifty outlying barns and other buildings. Is that an idea? Or head off to the trolley car museum in AVL?? Or some other urban spot?? I don't know what the protocol is here on doing this, or if I am supposed to go through a training, sign forms or.... Let me know, and if anyone is interested?

Michael, we are in the very early days of this MeetUp, so I'm getting a feel for what the interests are, what the demand is, and who can help me out. The general focus for this MeetUp is "urban", as there is already a "Hiking with Cameras" MeetUp. I would love to be able to host a weekly event if the demand is there, but I simply do not have the free time to do this on my own (hence, my question on the MeetUp sign-up if you would be interested in helping to lead an event). If you are interested in helping out with leading events, please give me a shout and we'll work something out. If you would like to suggest ideas for urban shoots in WNC, best bet is to post them on the discussion board here: http://www.meetup.com...

      Thanks for your interest, Michael!

David! -- I'm fairly new to photography and so haven't been in the habit of imagining the places I visit in terms of making pictures, but that is changing. We can talk more on 5/3 about ideas.

Hmmm, with 18 people attending, I guess we won't be sneaking up on anyone else for a candid shot -- rather we will be THE event wherever we find ourselves. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

We can always fracture into small groups and then reassemble

      1 · April 16, 2014

    • David S.

We'll see how many folks actually turn up on the day and, like Jay suggested, if needed we will split into two groups (or more). RAD is pretty spread out, so I don't think this will be a problem.

As we are in the early days of this MeetUp, I am refraining from putting "caps" on the group size. We made it through two walks in Downtown Asheville with about 18 in each group, and it wasn't a problem at all!

I forgot, I will be in Los Angeles during this time.

Just joined the group. Have a meeting on May 3, but am looking forward to meeting the people in the group.
