Intro to reading balance sheets

I think a pre-requisite for any wannabe value investor is the ability to read and decipher balance sheets. If some experienced investor is willing to share, I'm sure it'll benefit the group.

Hi, unfortuntately I was a good 1 and half hour late - despite that I left my office right on time. I was waiting for bus 162 at shenton way - it could be that the bus does not operate after 7.30pm! Given that I was not there at the start of the event, I would still rate it 3 out of 5 and hope that there are more such opportunities! And thanks a heap to the co-ordinator for making this event possible and a special thanks to Lin Yin for taking time out to share with us....

Dear all, hope this isn't too late. Bring a financial calculator for tonight's event. There will be no speaker, it will just be a time of sharing tips on handling financial statements such as balance sheets. Thanks.

Time for the metup is 8 pm and place of the meetup is the students's benches at basement 1 of SMU School of Information Systems (SIS). Nearest MRT stations are Dhoby Ghaut and Bras Basah stations.

I have booked tables for 40-50 people at Settler's Cafe (#B1-61, School of Information Systems). An alternative venue is TCC (Li Ka Shing Library #01-22), I have left my mobile no with the person in charge of TCC SMU branch just to check out the rates. As far as I know, these places are the most conducive because they are convenient, relatively cheap and could hold 40-50 people. I will put the quotes below:

Settler's Cafe: $3.50 per guest per hour. Could be more or less.

    Dear all,

I am the organiser for this event and my mobile number is 96863211. The assistant organiser is Lin Yin and her mobile number is 98009578.

This is an informal session of sharing on tips in handling financial statements (eg balance sheets). We will be meeting in front of the students's benches at basement 1 of SMU School of Information Systems (SIS). Nearest MRT stations to SMU are dhoby ghaut and bras basah. I will continue my email since I am running out of space.

if the venue has no renting cost, i don't think we have to pay anything.

Hi I am a newbie... can I ask if we have to pay? and where exactly in SMU? thank you! - ethan

    Hi Warren
do we have a speaker? If not, a few of us can bring along some financial statements from a few companies that we're familiar with, and we can have an informal sharing session instead since getting a speaker looks tough

    Dear all,

I forsee that there is not much time in changing the location. Just keep a look out for changes on this portal to the location, maybe even the timing. Alternatively, an sms will be sent to the interested participants. For now, I would tentatively place SMU School of Information Systems (B1) as the venue for the informal session (if the group is too big, we could go into the Settler's Cafe #B1-61), while I await Nixon's response.

Another possible location would be the SMU for those who don't wish to pay any rentals: http://www.smu.edu.sg/leasing/tenants/index.asp - we can have an informal session on sharing tips in handling balance sheets at the benches, and dinner can be bought from the nearby food outlets in SMU. If there are too many people, we could book tables for an informal gathering.

Nixon is also trying to get a room in the Raffles City Tower (A Phillips Investors Hub branch) that doesn't need rentals

    Dear all,

I have checked with the selected locations.

Some possible locations and their websites are below.

    National Library Building: http://www.nlb.gov.sg/page/corpFacilitiesRental

Clementi Community Club (Nearest MRT station: Clementi)
Seminar room: 200 dollars for technical fee for 3 h rental +107 dollars an hour for less than 100 people

Do drop me an email or a call at my mobile number [masked]) for any enquiries. Thanks.

    Dear Lin,

Yes, finding a good speaker would be a problem.

    May 27, 2011

  • Lin G.

I think finding a suitable location shouldn't be a problem. It's a matter of getting a good speaker.

    May 26, 2011

  • Warren L.

    Hi Lin,

Yes, those seem like good ideas. I was in the city hall area yesterday to enrol in a business mandarin program at singapore chinese chamber of commerce after my job interview at the british high comission. A normal rate to hire a classroom at the singapore chinese chamber of commerce is 50 dollars for 30 people.

    Hi Warren
Thanks for trying to organise this for us. This is something I'll be interested to attend.

I can't help with getting the speaker part, but as for the venue, we can either rent a conference room at one of NUSS guild houses (at Suntec City or at Kent Ridge), or I can offer the conference room in my office (at Camden Medical Centre at Tanglin) There's a cost for both though, not sure how much but don't think it'll be too much. And they're all very conducive for small size lectures.

  • Warren L.

    Dear all,

Would anyone be willing to be the speaker for this event? Also, the location at harbour front is not confirmed as I am still waiting for responses and it may not be conducive for 30 or so odd participants.

A possible location would be at SMU. http://www.smu.edu.sg/leasing/tenants/index.asp

I would like to source for the cheapest and best place to hold the session. Thanks.

  • Warren L.

Hi Nixon, yes, I will email you when I need help for the venue and speaker. Thanks.

    May 20, 2011

  • Nixon

Hi Warren, got it, let me know if you need help for a venue and speaker. Remember the dates and time must fit the speaker and venue availability as well. We need to confirm that before confirming any date/time.

    Have a good weekend!

    Hi Nixon,

I am not trying to be difficult here. I posted the message yesterday on the public portal that the meeting this friday was cancelled due to logistical difficulties like finding speakers and a suitable location. Even if I send messages to all the 30 participants now, it would get confusing because everyone would have different opinions, thus I think it's best to postphone the event to a later date.

To those who haven't responded: The meeting has been postphoned.

  • Nixon

Hi Warren, please do confirm with the members if this meetup is on and if there is any speaker.

All members, as this meetup is organiser by Warren, do confirm with him on the meeting.

    Enjoy.

    Hello everyone,

I apologise for this last minute notice. I think we have to postphone this event because there doesn't seem to be speakers.

I cannot be the speaker because I don't know much about reading balance sheets.

Lin Yin: Harbourfront level 3 is a good place for casual gatherings and one doesn't have to pay rental, but I don't know what the others think if there are no speakers. Probably, next time would be better when things are better coordinated.

    May 19, 2011

  • Lin Y.

If a room and projector is not required we can have it anywhere so long as there is a place to gather? Habourfront level 3 the ferry area (i vaguely recall that it's a quiet spot at night and there are lots of seats there). Do you all want to give it a try?

    May 18, 2011

  • Warren L.

Sorry, what I meant was " I am trying to get a room for this event at the selected locations in the group" By the way, how would rental costs of the room be settled? If I cannot get a room for this friday, I might have to postphone this event

    May 18, 2011

Hi Warren, the meetup system allows members to initiate any meetup with the owner's (that's me) approval. I thought you were organizing this coming since you have set the date/time and place?? As you can see on the status bar, you're the organiser for this.... :)

    May 17, 2011

  • Warren L.

I don't really know because I am not the organiser. I only suggested a meetup place and time because nobody seemed to be acting on it. Could the person organising this event please tell us exactly where to meet for the session? Also, if you don't mind, please leave us your name and mobile number?
