I don't think of a sunset as a good BW subject. The the strong lines in the "ribs" and the patterns in the clouds seem to me to work. What do you think?

Great lines in this photo! I like the tonal range and the suggestion that the clouds appear to be flying out towards the viewer. Great detail in the rings and the sand. I like how the water and mountains are not the focal point in this photo. Did you know you'd process this as a b&w when you took the photo?

Thanks, Carissa. No, it didn't occur to me that a sunset would be a good BW candidate. Recently, I've taken to just doing a quick click in lightroom to see if something might work. I generally use Topaz to do the conversion but recently I got a better conversion of a flower with just lightrooms sliders. This was HDR using Nik's software but I noticed after I uploaded it that I have some haloing that I don't like. I'm going to try again with Photomatix which (I think) has more control than Nik's. (That seems to be true with Topaz over Nik too) What I also notice is that the puddle in this might have supplied an interesting reflection of the sky with the pattern of the ribs imposed but it is too late right now to walk the few steps forward I should have taken last night. Generally I didn't have a lot of success last night and I might just post some of my oops for discussion later.

Oh, and the BW conversion was done with Topaz.

It makes me think of an extinct animal ribcage from eons ago. A reminder that life is fragile and fleeting.

Donna, I bet that's what the sculptor was thinking of, too.
