Our featured topic: It's possible to add components, move around modules, and improve your Joomla! site while it's running live. But this is a risky way to do it. Good development process calls for setting up a "staging" or "development" server, shielded from the public, where developers can experiment and fix bugs. When the new features are ready, you push them to the live server. That's a pretty theory. But what happens in practice?

Jim DeLaHunt will talk about the reliability and availability goals for a Joomla! development process. He will show how using separate development and localhost servers can help achieve these goals. He will share his favourite Joomla! component for pushing content live from the dev server. He will sketch a workstation setup which allows interactive debugging of the PHP code for Joomla! components and core code. He will analyse the contents of a Joomla! database, and which part should not be copied from a dev server. He will highlight some of the difficult issues which come with trying to do a push from a development server to a live server.

There will be plenty of time for a Q&A.

Jim DeLaHunt is a Vancouver, Canada-based software engineer and consultant in multilingual websites. He helps business reach culturally diverse markets through globalised technology products. He is an active contributor to the Joomla and Drupal ecosystems, and is a regular Unicode conference participant. He also writes, teaches, and develops software. Sorry every one, There was an accident on Lionsgate bridge, about 5:00PM, and I was in the traffic about 45 minutes, then I turned to come over from the Second Narrow bridge, but huge traffic as well, therefor I missed the session today. Hope to see you all soon.

Very usefull and practical information every developer should keep in mind if you want to do some serious changes without the general public watching every step. Copying your files to a seperate address, another server or a personal server looks easy but the problem comes in after a period of time where your live site's data may have changed considerably and you now want to upload your completed or newest version. We have to come up with a series of steps to allow a "merge" of data between the old and new.
