FORMAL NOTICE OF THE VANCOUVER LINUX USERS GROUP ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
As per the by-laws of the Vancouver Linux Users Group (VanLug), this email constitutes a formal notice to members, in lieu of written notice, of the upcoming 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held on Monday, May 27, 2013, at 7:00pm in Room 7000, SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver, British Columbia.
An AGM is the annual business meeting of an organization, at which the executive and directors are elected for the coming year, and the previous year's activities and finances are reviewed. An AGM gives the members of an organization a voice in it's administration and holds the administration accountable to its members. In the case of VanLug, we also present the Dave Michelson award, and motions from the floor concerning the governance, policy, procedures, and programs of VanLug are presented, discussed and voted upon.
It is the custom at VanLug, to elect our Board of Directors by slate. This saves considerable time. Accordingly, interested individuals should consider volunteering to serve on our Board of Directors. People wishing to serve as Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Webmaster and Meetup Coordinator should notify Kim Kulak, AGM Coordinator, <[masked]> of their aspirations. Likewise, people wishing to be elected as Directors should also contact Kim. Please volunteer your time and expertise to serve the common good.
As well, members of VanLug who do not wish to stand for election, but who would like to contribute to the governance of the user group should consider volunteering for one of our subcommittees. These are:
1. Lectures and Topics Subcommittee
2. Website and Mailing List Subcommittee
3. Social Events Subcommittee
4. Outreach Subcommittee
5. Open Classroom Subcommittee
6. Advocacy Subcommittee
7. Facilities and Venues Subcommittee
Vanlug subcommittees help us to organize and distribute the regular tasks associated with running the user group, thereby leaving the Board free to concentrate on timely matters. The duties associated with most subcommittees are light and consist of attending a meeting or two at the appropriate time during the year and answering a few emails. Please consider making a contribution to your local Linux community by joining a subcommittee. Again contact Kim Kulak as above.
It is also important to note that, while any member of the general public may attend our AGM and participate in discussions, only VanLug members may vote to elect our new Board of Directors for the coming year or vote on any motions put before the assembled group. Memberships will be available for sale during the AGM. Please purchase a membership and support VanLug, as dues are our principle source of revenue. Membership also entitles you to certain discounts.
As is our custom, the 2013 Dave Michelson Award will be presented at the AGM to this year's recipients. The Dave Michelson Award is presented annually to deserving but unsung individuals in the the local Linux community who have worked extensively to promote and advance FLOSS. It was named after Dr. David Michelson, founder and long time Chair of VanLug. This year's winners will be announced at the AGM, and deliver a short speech.
As mentioned above, Motions From The Floor will be accepted for debate, discussion, and decision. If you wish to influence the direction in which VanLug heads, the initiatives it undertakes, or the way it operates, this is the way to do it. Please think about the kind of user group you would like to see.
Finally, as with all meetings this year we will close the meeting with a book raffle. Many thanks go to O'Reilly for supporting VanLug. After the meeting adjourns, VanLug will be hosting a start/end of year celebration at Steamworks Pub, located one block north of Harbour Centre. Appetizers and soft drinks are on us. Alcohol and entrees are at your own expense. Come out and party with us!
