LinuxFaire (See below for Website 'blurb')

Hi folks,

Tentatively we're looking to develop a major Linux centred event for the fall of 2015. Our working title for this event is Linuxfaire.

Pulling off such an event requires the combined efforts of 50-75 people over the better part of a year, and as this is our first effort with such an event, we lack the needed experience. So we have to overplan and give ourselves plenty of time to get things done right.

Initially, we're thinking that our event should be something like the Bellingham LinuxFest - vendors, food, and lectures. Myself I'd like to take it beyond that and do something to address the issue of Linux legitimacy in the Vancouver area. To my way of thinking, all our hard work should be for more than just showcasing Linux to the local faithful. We need to use the opportunity to grow the market for Linux and expand the community beyond where it is today. So maybe some sort of special showcase or targeted track might be in order as well.

At the initial meeting, nine people showed up and no companies were represented. This is a poor start. It's nowhere near the level of interest and participation that's needed to pull off an event of this scope. More importantly, the people who are interested have no experience in large event organization. Thus far it looks very much like an uphill struggle. I'm hoping the next meeting will yield better results. I'm certain a city the size of Vancouver can in theory do this. The question is will it?

So show up at the next meeting. It will be held on Monday June 23 at 7:00pm in Rooms 7000 at SFU Harbour Centre, 515 West Hastings Street. Our usual meeting room. Let's begin to move this forward.

Website Committee Meeting

Hi Folks; so several of you came out and showed some strong interest in getting our website moving along. We need it designed to allow online sign-up to events, online membership sign-up, online donations and acceptance of membership fees, a good landing page that includes a message from various members of the executive, posting of articles and links that will be of interest to our members, a discussion forum of some sort, and anything else the bright minds of VanLUG can think of.

If you are interested in helping with the design, coding, layout, and any thing else to do with making www.vanlug.bc.ca a better, more functional website, please do come out to the meeting.
