Virtual Reality night at VHS

We're having another VR Night at Vancouver Hackspace.

Check out a video of the last one here:

Lots of great virtual reality gear, software, and great ideas.

I got to learn a bit more about what keeps VHS alive at the last QGM, and found we can help them out with either monthly membership or by throwing in a $10 bill into the donation bucket.   It's a great space, glad to contribute to keep it alive. Everything goes towards making the space more awesome.

Later we head to the amazing Craft Beer Market for eats, drinks, and socializing. It's in the Salt Building, 85 West 1st Ave.

See you at VHS!

I think this legitimizes the VR business. Will other VR companies become hot properties?

Awesome show this time! Thanks to David Clement for showing his custom VR headset, Ross & Ian showing their Verold Studio product, Heather & Brad showing Gorgon, Jesse showing Snow Drift, and lets not forget the cool 3D immersive sound engine by Richard Zhang. I was totally blown away by it all.

So, Sony did announce their VR head set tonight. It's still got a code-word project name, so it's in no way ready for consumer launch. It looks very similar to what Oculus is proposing for their launch. Their message (like Valve's) was one about everyone working together to benefit the VR industry, which is something I'm glad to see. The question comes up, "what does Sony add to the equation?" The answer ironically is a product that's a few years old. They can (if they choose) bundle with Playstation Move controllers and give a player hand orientation and position out-of-the-box. They already have input solved and manufactured. All other head-set creators have to deal with fractured input standards.

To summarize, it's nice to see them in this industry, because it will bring credibility (and marketing $$$). They're not adding much except standardized hardware and input, but those are great additions.

Sony has been executing absolutely brilliantly this past year! With mobile, tablet, and smartwatch all waterproof. PS4 cameras and their decision to axe their PC line. Then going into VR with PS4, and leverage all their PS Move gear is just brilliant. They are really making a case for themselves.

    Wait... Crap.
March 19th I'll be at GDC. April is clear though I think. I should be able to tell you about Sony's kit next time.

I got to try out the VRCade system in Seattle, and it's AWESOME! Yes, really truly low latency, fully immersive, and wireless VR. We got to do a road-trip soon. See you at the next meetup on March 19! Lets coordinate the road-trip there.
