Actors Drop in Meetup

Join us for some dramatic, rambunctious, hilarious and daring theatre every Tuesday night. Beginners welcome, you can watch the first week. The audience is friendly and supportive of everyone.

We have a core group of about 10 and new people every week who cold read scenes from classic plays, film, television as well as newly written scenes never performed before and we'd like you to to check us out. We give each other feed back, get better of what we do and have a lot of fun! Lately we have been getting record numbers of new and experienced actors that total about 18. We socialize and sing later at karaoke.

The location is at Cineworks which is the back alley entrance to the Pacific Cinemateque, 1181 Howe. The alley entrance iis between Davie and Helmcken, closer to Helmcken in downtown Vancouver B.C.. If you are in front of the Cinemateque walk left to Helmcken then take a left till you get to the alley. Turn left into the alley and walk by 8 parking spaces till you get to a door with an Actors Drop In sign on it. You can also park in one of the spaces.

I'm sorry if I sound abrasive. The organizers did not start this group to make money. On the contrary, they volunteer an inordinate amount of time to planning these meetings to give EVERYONE, not just would-be actors, a chance to practise acting in a safe and nonjudgemental environment. They devote a lot of time and energy to make the experience as fun and relaxed as possible. That's why I get very angry when it appears that their efforts are not appreciated and that they are being unduly criticized. I think that if you investigate the cost of acting classes in Vancouver, you will find that $7 is a very reasonable price to pay for the experience you gain from attending these meetings. Again, I apologize if I have offended you. That was not my intention.

I would hardly call these drop in sessions, "classes", and shouldn't be labeled as such. I agree, they are a gift to the community for the access to be able to do such, but it's best for newbies, as professionals can find ways to do it themselves with others. I think you're taking things a little too seriously. I can pay 15$ for a improv drop in workshop and get 3 hours of stage time, yet if I pay 7$ at this workshop, I get maybe 15 minutes stage time.

Another full house!!! So many new members! And Darry was SUCH a good sport to be willing to wear the wig, glasses, bra and grapefruit for my script! Thanks so much!

I've always thought that $7 for 2 1/2 hours of cold reading was REALLY CHEAP. I'd be willing to pay more considering what acting classes cost. There are plenty of participants (several nights with a full house - standing room only) with the number of new members increasing exponentially every week. They all seem very eager to come and participate and they all appear to really enjoy performing as well as watching others perform. I would think that if they were unhappy with the cost and location that they would be posting complaints and membership would be diminishing instead of getting bigger. It's all about freedom of choice. If anyone is not happy about any aspect of the meeting, he/she doesn't have to come.

We have tried in the past to find a night time venue where people can drop in through the evening but were unable to find one. Also,
the Drop In has been running for 11 years and there are now at least 10 people who go to Karaoke afterwards because they can walk there. People from the Drop In's past often meet us there. Also, the venue itself is ideal for performance,

Hello, my name is Brian and I'll see if I can answer this one.

I can't speak for the organizers as to whether they'll ever change the venue, but you can do a heck of a lot when you're "just" reading and performing scripts.

If you've never done any acting before and you're looking for hands-on instruction, there are a lot of acting classes around Vancouver which will probably benefit you more. The actor's drop-in will give you opportunities to practice performing and obtaining feedback from other performers, but it isn't a class. There's no curriculum here, and you have the choice of coming in whenever you'd like. You have the freedom to decide what you want to take from the drop-in.

Aside from reading and performing, you're also welcome to write your own scripts. I brought in my first last week, and will be bringing more in the upcoming weeks.

I wonder if we'll ever find a cheaper venue? I mean, all we're doing is reading and performing scripts.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
