Film: Vermeer and Music

We'll meet at 6:50pm on the third floor right by the escalators & head in at 7pm so we can find seats together. Please have your ticket purchased before you meet up with the group.

Film description:

The National Gallery, London, is offering a major exhibition on one of the most startling and fascinating artists of all-time Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer painted little more than 30 works that still exist, and the National Gallery has chosen to focus on his art in relation to music. Music was one of the most popular themes of Dutch painting and revealed an enormous amount about the sitter and the society. The film goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire story of Vermeer's life and, in doing so will show in detail many other of the artist's great works. The program will suit the wide audience who adore Vermeer's work and who want both to see it in detail and to learn more about this mysterious, fascinating man.

Hi Liz, I would have loved to have gone for a cocktail or coffee (well ... maybe not a coffee so much ... ) ;) in fact for me that's kinda the point of going to a movie with a group of people, so that we can yak about it afterwards. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining ..., okay well maybe I am a little bit, but still I was very glad to have been invited, enjoyed the film immensely so glad that I went and a big sincere" Thank You" to Carla for suggesting it! And Liz, next event, if you want to go for a cocktail or coffee/ hot chocolate afterwards, count me in!

I have to say that, after such a swift exodus from the theatre, I felt a little left in the dust. However a group of women followed out from behind me (while I was still getting my coat on) and somehow we all started talking. They were all such fans of Vermeer, one very elderly woman was surprisingly so well read on him (and we all caught-on and shared a sense of humour with regards to his implied lechery) that quite a lively discussion ensued. We stayed in the foyer talking for at least 20 minutes possibly longer. As it was a short fil and still so early in the evening I went for a little stroll around Chinatown (such a nice fall evening, lot's of people out and about, love the architecture ...) and I thought it was so nice that those women had engulfed me into their conversation, I guess one group of art enthusiasts is as good as another.

I felt a little deflated too...even though I wasn't able to sit with the group during the movie, I was glad to finally recognize this group of 'strangers' & be welcomed into it...would have been nice to continue the experience over a coffee or cocktail at any of the nearby venues. Hopefully, next time...?

This meetup would have been a much better experience for me if I had actually been part of the group. Sorry I missed everyone - But thank you Carla for organizing and getting me out of the house.

Sorry I missed meeting-up with the group last night - I was sitting directly behind you in the theater - if only Andy had been wearing that tree on his head! I thoroughly enjoyed gaining a deeper understanding of Vermeer's painting & especially liked the musical aspect. If any of you ever have the chance to explore the Museum of Musical Instruments in Brussels, don't miss it. It is one of the world's most fascinating museums (IMHO)

Carla: Thanks again for organizing this. What a great program! I'll never see Vermeer's work the same way. It was also quite fun getting to meet several of you. Hope some of us can duck out for a coffee afterward next time. Cheers, Andy

I'd like to go, too. My preference would be the Cineplex at International Village (W Pender Street) near the Stadium skytrain station.
