I'm looking for a small, committed group to talk about a challenging work at a slow pace -- talking about a fairly small number of pages per session. If you're in a hurry to get through a life-list of books, I wish you well in another group. But if you like savouring the details of language and enjoy deep discussion of ideas, with a great piece of writing as the starting point and focus, you might find a home here.
We will be reading:
1. A few essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson (TBA), then... 2. Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass, then... 3. William Carlos Williams, Paterson, then... 4. Charles Olson, The Maximus Poems
These are the primary texts, but we'll also read short excerpts from companion texts from contemporary philosophy and culture to shed light on the primary reading.
Some prior exposure to philosophy and critical theory will be helpful -- otherwise you may find this heavy going.
