Under the hood of D3

Hello!

D3 (Data-Driven Documents) has often come up during our past Meetups so it would seem appropriate to dedicate a meet up to review exactly what it is and provide examples of what you can do with it.

D3 is a powerful JavaScript library to help users create their own data visualizations. It lets users map data to DOM nodes in an HTML document. It also provides lots of functions to help visually encode the abstract data sets.

Meetup Agenda:

1. VDV Group News (5 mins)

2. Into to D3.js (35 mins)

In this talk Manu Kapoor will be going over what makes D3 so special and powerful; with some code examples to get people up and running with creating their own visualizations. He will also be showcasing some interesting and popular visualizations created with the library.

Manu has been doing data visualization related projects since 2005 when he got his hand on an alpha version of Processing. After a Masters Degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a stint in the games industry for several years, he landed in Vancouver to work with startups with a data-driven approach. He currently works as a Front End Engineer for LX Ventures.

3. Member D3 examples and Discussion
-- Any member can should their D3 examples Please keep your showcase to 1 or 2 minutes. (15 mins)

4. Member Announcements
-- Any member can make a 30 second announcement (5 mins)

5. Networking & Wrap-up (10 mins)

Code for the species viz? I'll have to ask for permission from the data owner and possibly clean up the code before I let it go. It will be forthcoming in an upcoming paper, along with a possibly a few a other D3 plots. I'll keep the group informed.

    Cheers,
    Niels

Here is the information regarding my company's job posting. Our ideal front end developer would have a passion around data analytics, visualizations and BI along with experience with JS development and the Angular framework.

    Thanks for the great presentation!

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the great event...a lot of useful information and great to see some examples of how people are using d3. Here is the posting for the position I mentioned yesterday...a lot of the development we do is figuring out the best way to display lots and lots of really complicated data sets so if this is something that may interest you we would love to hear from you. Any questions please drop me an email :)

There will be no video, but I will see what we can do about pulling some notes together. Please change your RSVP to not going, as we have a waiting list for this one. Thanks.
