Drupal Meetup: Custom CTools plugins for Panels

NOTICE: Due to Drupalcon occurring during our regularly scheduled week, we will be moving this meetup to the 30th of May.

Presenter: Kevin Hu, Drupal Developer, ImageXMedia

This presentation will take a look at how to create custom ctools plugins for use with the popular Panels module.

Four types of plugins will be presented:

  • content types (of the ctools kind),
  • contexts, arguments,
  • and relationships.

Through the use of these four plugins, we can see how they can be leveraged to make elegant sites with an emphasis on the ease of use for content editors.

A high-level overview of the purpose and capabilities of each plugins will first be given, followed by a practical demo of each custom plugin in action and a walkthrough on the steps needed to create one.

Kevin first worked with Drupal two years ago during his undergrad years, tasked with migrating a site from Drupal 5 to 6, and chose instead to rebuild the site on Drupal 7. Falling in love with the versatility of Drupal, he never looked back, and a year later found a spot at ImageX, where he continues to pursue Drupal development with an emphasis on developing powerful sites that are simple to use.

Thank you Kevin for the talk, it's great to know that Panels has a similar plugin architecture to Views. Hacks abound:)
