Lynn Canyon Park [Rescheduled]

Lynn Canyon Park officially opened to the public in 1912 and has grown to 617 acres of second growth forest with most of the trees aged approximately 80 to 100 years old. The park features a suspension bridge that sways 50 meters above the canyon. There is stunning creek and waterfall views and hiking trails through the temperate rainforest. Second growth trees include Western Redcedar, Douglas-fir, and Western Hemlock trees draped with moss. http://lynncanyon.ca/ Trail map: http://bit.ly/xJnwiL

1. Where will we meet?

We will meet at the main entrance to the trail by the Lynn Canyon Café on Peters Road at around 9:45 AM and head out at 10:00 AM sharp. Then we will head towards the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge.

There are two walks to choose from at this point:

  • After the bridge, the trail to the left leads you North West through the park. This is a shorter walk which will lead you to a 30-Foot pool. You may then either reverse your walk back to the suspension bridge and to the parking area, or from the pool there is a very large stairway which will take you to the Pipe Bridge, which crosses the canyon and leads to the North entrance of the park at the top of Lynn Valley Road. If you do not wish to venture this way, return to the bridge the way you came and the trail loops back towards the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge and the Lynn Canyon Café.
  • After the bridge, follow the boardwalk towards the right after the bridge and then follow the trail East to Twin Falls and the Twin Falls Bridge which offers a beautiful view of a waterfall and large pool below. After the bridge there is a hike up many steps and if you are comfortable with hiking tougher terrain, turn left and you can reach the river by climbing down a steep bank (it's quite wet with rocks and roots everywhere), if not, you can turn right and head back up towards the parking area and the Lynn Canyon Café.

Please be warned, this isn't flat easy terrain to walk/hike, there are lots of steep steps, roots and rocks along parts of the trails, and it can be slippery if there has been recent rain. Please consider whether or not you are comfortable with this sort of a walk, especially if you will be carrying gear.

I have a bunch of trail maps printed to hand out to those who would like one.

We will finish up about 12:00 PM and meet at the Lynn Canyon Café for some hot drinks and a snack. http://www.lynnvalleycentre.ca/Lynn%20Canyon%20Cafe.htm

2. What can I shoot?

There is no shortage of subject matter to photograph, wonderful Autumnal forest scenes, river and riverbank landscapes, waterfalls, forest wildlife, lots of macro opportunities as well of mushrooms, moss and other flora.

3. What should I bring?

  • A camera, it doesn't matter if you have a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, either one is fine.
  • A tripod (recommended).
  • Wear comfortable warm clothes and good shoes for hiking, be sure you are comfortable.

4. How do I get there?

Here is a great link for directions by car and by bus: http://lynncanyon.ca/directions.html or you can use Google Maps or MapQuest to plan your trip.

Car parking in Lynn Canyon Park is free. You can park in the upper parking lot, or the lower one just past the Café (the Café is in the middle).

I did limit this photowalk to a smaller group as it would be too difficult on the narrow trails with a larger group. If this walk is successful, and there is demand, I may repeat it.

RSVP Protocol - if you RSVP to this event and then can't make it please have the courtesy to change your RSVP so that people on the waiting list will have a chance to participate.

This photowalk will be weather dependent. If it looks like bad weather conditions, I will reschedule.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Katherine

Thank you for organizing the beautiful walk Katherine! Despite the rain, it was enjoyable, and what a lovely setting for photography.

Very nice walk, a little damp, but doable!

Last minute cancellations made me miss this. I got notice that I made it in off of the waiting list 3 hours ago. This is a shame as I had enough room to car pool 4 people.

I was on the waitlist and my RSVP was confirmed at 8:42am on sunday. I had already made other plans and left the house so I didn't even see the email until sunday evening. I'm guessing other people were in the same situation and this might partly explain why so many people confirmed didn't show up.

    • Rob

So take your name off the waiting list if you made other plans and KNOW that you will not be able to attend, it's just as inconsiderate!

I know it's a ways off yet, but I'm back to looking for someone willing to car pool. I have no car and live in the downtown. I can meet at any location downtown or on the north shore side at the seabus station. Anyone?

Hi Sharon, Unless it is down pouring tomorrow morning, I will head out to Lynn Canon from New Westminster, I'd be happy to take you along if you could possibly ride the sky train to the New West station, interested?

      April 6, 2013

    • sharon

Hi Siu Yin thank you for the offer but I do have a ride for tomorrow. Very kind of you to offer. Thanks again. See you tomorrow.

I can take 3 people if rides are needed. Leaving from Oak & 16th area. I'm also bringing my dog in case that is an issue for anyone who wants a ride. He's a large black shepherd but very friendly. I don't mind doing a reasonable sweep of the area to pick up.
    See you next weekend :)

We are unable to attend to attend on the the most recently-set date. Very disappointed.

What use of a RSVP for people. Not everyone shows up when they RSVP. Seen this on many other walks. There's never a check in so no way to know who's there is RSVP or just crashing the walk.

    1 · March 18, 2013

    • Rob M.

Not just that but I drive at least am hr to go to the walks but all the last minute cancels suck

      March 18, 2013

    • Rob

I was really surprised at the cancelation, as I happened to be in North Van Saturday and managed to get a couple off the bridge. I took a few trails and didn't find it too muddy, but what would you expect in a rainforest and all? I might have to go guerrilla myself! lol

      March 18, 2013

Considering that we live in Vancouver and thus the probability of rain is always going to be very high, in the future we should consider to go ahead with these type of meet ups rain or shine

    1 · March 18, 2013

    • Denis S.

I second that...don't feel like shooting in rain then change you're RSVP
