Come out for the Hat's Off Day Festival in the Heights

History

HAT'S OFF DAY CELEBRATIONS - BURNABY HEIGHTS

This festival, held along Hastings Street, is a tradition in the Heights.  If the weather is good the street will be full of people.  Let's attempt to meet up for the group photo.  However keeping together as a group for the day most likely won't happen.  It's every photog for themselves.  I encourage you to come out and at least experience Hat's Off Day!

About 150 years ago, the Heights was part of the rolling landscape that would one day be Greater Vancouver.  The Heights commercial area has been a street-level community shopping area for over 100 years now, and still retains much of its unique flavor.

In the early 1900’s thousands of immigrants came to the west coast of B.C. With the opening of Hastings Street in 1902, and the arrival of the streetcar in North Burnaby in 1908, Burnaby was finally open for larger settlement, and with population growth, the first merchants soon appeared.

The first grocer in the Heights, run by the Goodridge family, was located at Alpha and Hastings, and later, a second opened near Willingdon and Hastings by the Field family. Prior to World War I, most of the stores were located near Boundary and Hastings, and included a butcher shop, a hardware shop, as well as a grocery store, with a druggist, bakery and print shop opening a few years later.

In 1954, the business people of North Burnaby formed a group called the North Burnaby Merchants.  They organized “Old Fashion Days,” a customer appreciation event.

Encouraged by their success, and in conjunction with the community, the North Burnaby Merchants organized a new event named “Hats Off Day.” It was a way for the merchants to recognize their customers and take their hats off to them. This event has grown immensely over the years, merging with a neighbourhood pride celebration, and has become Burnaby’s biggest parade and street festival.

Hastings Street between Boundary Road and Gamma will be closed for the day for this event.  The parade and vintage car show along with the opportunity to sample some great food will be the order of the day.

Where will we meet?

Let's meet at the northwest corner of the Safeway parking lot (on Hastings at Willingdon) around 9:00AM for the group photo.  The Police Drill Team beings at 9:30AM and the parade starts at 10:00AM.  This festival goes until 4:00PM with tons of activities and a sea of people on the street so stay as long as you like.  Check out the vintage car show that will be set up between Willingdon and Gamma.

As this event is pretty much a free-for-all (in the gentlest sense of the word) this is definitely an opportunity for us all to be creative with our photography.  This is my 'hood and I love this event.  I might even get my Pony ready to be in the car show for the day.  This event does go rain or shine.  Let's hope for the latter.

There will be lots of food stalls or restaurants open.  Due to the nature of the event we won't meet up after the group photo.  Everyone just come out and enjoy a slice of the Heights!

What should I bring?

  • A Camera, It doesn't matter if you have a cameraphone, a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, any camera is fine.
  • A tripod (optional)
  • Wear comfortable clothes, shoes and bring your sunscreen.

How do I get there?

Parking is at a premium for this event and a lot of street parking is off limits, unless you don't mind walking a few blocks to get to Hastings.  Transit is your best bet.

For transit info....www.translink.ca

RSVP Protocol - if you RSVP to this event and then can't make it please have the courtesy to change your RSVP so that people on the waiting list will have a chance to participate.

I am enthusiastic about photography and a lover of the City Burnaby....however I'm not qualified to answer any technical questions you may have...there may be more skilled members participating on the walk to answer your questions...if not Barry has kindly offered to answer any questions by email.

AT ALL TIMES, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW PHOTO WALKERS, YOUR PROPERTY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

AFTER THE MEET-UP DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD FIVE OF YOUR BEST IMAGES.

Cheers

It was fun---The Heights is an awesome community! The concept of getting businesses, residents and 'outsiders' together was an impressive one, on many levels.

Thanks to all of you who ventured out into what could have been a very wet day, but wasn't. Jay, sorry we missed you as we sort of separated after the photo was taken. Thanks for doing that Denis! I hope you enjoyed a glimpse of my neighborhood and you got some great pictures of whatever caught your eye. Look forward to seeing more of them posted.

Can anyone help me how i can reach there if i travel by transit

    May 30, 2013

    • Jan

Jay, if you are coming by Skytrain get off at Brentwood and take the #130 up to Hastings and Willingdon. It might turn on Pender, which is the back of the Safeway, so you will have to come thru the lot. Otherwise, you can take the #135 from downtown (SFU) and depending on the time, it might travel thru the back streets, but should get you close to Willindon and Hastings. Basically, just confirm with the driver that they can get you to or very close to Hastings and Willingdon. Hope that helps. Richard if you can shed any more light on the transit info please feel free.

I'll catch up later... Have chiro appnt at 9. Watch for the leather hat! Let me know when/ where the reassembly for lunch is happening.

    May 31, 2013

    • Jan

We don't have a reassembly for lunch. The chances of getting into or onto a patio café are pretty remote. We could try meeting at the NBI for a drink, but I will leave that up to the group itself. I purposely didn't schedule a meetup after due to the nature of the event.

Hi Everyone, Is there anyone coming to this event that might be brining a tripod with them? I'd like to get a group photo (something we tend to forget to do) and would appreciate it if someone would be kind enough to take it. Let me know. Thanks

  • Jan

Thanks Richard. it's been a long time since I have taken the bus. Appreciate your expertise.

    May 12, 2013

  • Richard F.

The bus is a 130 that will take you to Willingdon & Pender from Brentwood as well the 135 does go through but on side streets when Hastings is shut down
Richard is a transit operator with 38 years of driving

    1 · May 10, 2013

  • Jan

Just an FYI - if you are coming by transit your best bet is to come via skytrain to Brentwood and catch a bus from Brentwood Mall up Willingdon. It will most likely turn on Pender right behind the Safeway. If you come up Hastings on the 135 it could either end up stopping at Boundary and Hastings (other end of the festival) or if you are lucky it might get you close to Willingdon and Hastings. Sorry, I don't know the bus from Brentwood Mall :(
