Minter Gardens will be closing for good by mid-October this year. I've always wanted to see the gardens and what better reason than to combine beautiful flowers with classic cars - two of my favourites!
Centuries ago, a massive mountain slide swept over the fertile lands of the eastern Fraser Valley. The rock fall pushed north across the Fraser River and ended its westerly flow at the area which is now Minter Gardens. The unique land formations left the area unsuitable for crop farming but early settlers found it ideal for raising cattle and other animals. Tall native specimen trees added to the charm of the location, and thousands of wild geraniums, columbine, roses and bleeding hearts added a finishing touch. It was this site that Brian and Faye Minter first saw on Christmas Day, 1977. The landscape was so unique, and the setting against 7,000 foot Mt. Cheam so picturesque, that a once-in-a-lifetime dream was born: to create one of the most beautiful gardens in the world!
Minter Gardens features 12 uniquely themed gardens designed to dazzle the senses with massive displays of colour and fragrance. Gently winding pathways progressively link each garden, and interspersed throughout will be the cars of the Classic Car Show. There will be a fantastic variety of vehicles from the 1930s to 1970s, so be sure to bring your camera as you walk down memory lane!
Live musical entertainment by Company B Jazz Band will help get you into the spirit of things and the Chilliwack Spinners and Weaver's Guild will be there to spin a yarn or two as well!
Around 11:30 we will meet up at the Envision Garden Café in Minter Gardens for coffee (as long as it's not super busy) and people can decide if they want to stay longer or head out, or take a trip up the road to Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park for some great photos of the falls and a short hike, if you have the energy!
PLEASE NOTE: Should the forecast call for rain the event will be postponed and attendees who have paid will be first back onto the reschedule date.
What should I bring:
A camera, it doesn't matter if you have a cameraphone, a point and shoot camera or a digital SLR, any camera is fine....because of the large crowds maybe minimal gear.
Make sure you are comfortable and dressed for whatever our unpredictable weather may be that day.....
Where will we meet?
We will meet outside the main gate to the gardens by 9:30AM. We will go into the gardens and have our group photo done and then you are free to explore the gardens and cars for as long as you like.
As a group we can enter for $13.00 per person. I will be collecting $13.00 from those attending, prior to the event. You can pay me via cheque or cash. I prefer not to do paypal as I'm charged for each transaction and therefore do not recoup the full cost of the entrance fee unless I charge each of you $14.00 to attend! I'd rather not do that! Therefore if you are attending you can pay me at our next meet up or mail me a cheque by contacting me thru my profile.
If you have not paid two days (by Friday at 5:00PM) prior to the event you will be taken off the list so that someone on the waitlist can participate.
I will provide my cell phone # to those who have RSVP'd and paid for the event.
How do I get there?
Minter Gardens is approximately 90 minutes east of Vancouver just off the Highway 1. Click on the map to get directions to the gardens.
Carpools can be arranged amongst individuals, but please remember that if you are a passenger the carpooling rule is $5.00 per person / per hour for the time you are with the driver to help cover gas and wear/tear. You can work out your own arrangements, but please be respectful of the fact your driver has offered up their vehicle to get you out to the event and should be compensated as you both see acceptable.
What can I shoot?
Pretty much everything. There are tons of flowers, waterfalls, classic cars, people, musicians - did I mention classic cars! You are only limited by your imagination!
We are lovers of the City of Vancouver We are enthusiastic about photography and the GVRD....however we are not qualified to answer any technical questions you may have...there may be more skilled members participating on the walk to answer your questions...if not Barry J. Brady has kindly offered to answer any questions by email.
AT ALL TIMES, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW PHOTO WALKERS, YOUR PROPERTY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!
AFTER THE MEET-UP DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD UP TO EIGHT OF YOUR BEST IMAGES. Any more than 8 per person will be removed.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
