Mountain View Cemetery - WILL BE RESCHEDULED DUE TO THE WEATHER

  • Sep 28, 2013 · 3:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!

I"M SORRY TO HAVE TO CANCEL FOR TODAY......IT APPEARS THE WEATHER GODS FINALLY GOT ME! THIS IS THE FIRST PHOTO-WALK I HAVE PLANNED THAT IT HAS RAINED.....AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE TORRENTIAL.

THANKS TO THOSE OF YOU THAT RESPONDED, IT APPEARS THAT THE MAJORITY OF YOU WOULD PREFER TO RESCHEDULE THIS PHOTO-WALK SO WE WILL. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE STILL 48 OF YOU SAYING YOU WILL ATTEND, I KNOW FROM PAST EXPERIENCES WITH THIS THAT WHEN IT RAINS HARD (LIKE IT IS SUPPOSED TO TODAY), ONLY A HANDFUL WILL SHOW. IT TAKES US A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME TO RESEARCH THESE EVENTS, AND I WOULD RATHER POSTPONE, SO THAT MORE MEMBERS CAN COMFORTABLY ATTEND AND ENJOY.

TO THOSE OF YOU AMBITIOUS MEMBERS THAT STILL WANT TO GO OUT TODAY, FEEL FREE TO DO SO AND ENJOY....THE PHOTO ALBUM WILL BE AVAILABLE TO POST YOUR PHOTOS.......AND MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A GROUP SHOT!

THE SYSTEM WILL NOT PERMIT ME TO SIMPLY SIGN YOU ALL UP TO THE RESCHEDULED EVENT, I WILL WRITE IT UP LATER TODAY....WATCH FOR IT IN THE UPCOMING MEET-UPS....AND HOPEFULLY, WE WILL GET A BREAK AND GET A DECENT DAY....I AM LOOKING AT SATURDAY OCTOBER 26...

STAY WARM AND DRY TODAY.....SEE SOME OF YOU LATER AT THE MAIN ON MAIN!

KELLY,

TRACY AND JAN

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

THIS WALK WAS SO POPULAR LAST TIME, MANY OF YOU REQUESTED A REPEAT, SO HERE IT IS.....DETAILS MAY BE UPDATED CLOSER TO THE DAY (If IT'S A GLOOMY DAY WE WILL START EARLIER).....BUT WE WILL BE EXPLORING A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PART OF THE CEMETERY....THE NORTH SIDE OF THE OLD SECTION AND THE HORNE SECTIONS. THIS IS WHERE THE FIRST INTERNMENTS ARE, AS WELL AS SEVERAL MAYORS AND EARLY BUILDERS OF THE CITY.

Cemeteries, particularly older ones like Mountain View offer an ideal setting to engage history and nature...they are an oasis of tranquility in a chaotic city......they are creepy, peaceful and famous.....and they are a place filled with stories.

Mountain View is Vancouver's only cemetery and has been owned and operated by the city since it opened in 1886..it's beautiful vistas and open spaces stretch out over the 106 acres west of Fraser Street between 31st and 43rd Avenues.

It is the final resting place of over 200,000 people. Some of the notable residents of the cemetery include: the founders of the city and 14 of its mayors; the architects and builders who helped shape the city's skyline, firefighters and policeman; many of whom lost their lives in the line of duty, veterans of both World Wars and those that perished in some of the worst disasters this general area has ever known..including the sinking of the SS Sophia in 1918, the Lakeway Tram crash of 1909 and the Rogers Pass Avalanche of 1910.

We highly recommend that before the photowalk, you take some time to go visit the cemeteries web-site http://mountain.view@vancouver.ca

Look on the left of the page and click on "visit mountainview cemetery"....self guided tours.....it will give you an idea of how large this place is.

For you Iphone/Ipad users look on this page for an app to download called icemetery where you can look up individual graves; some of interest include:

Robertha Marshall...... Titanic survivor

Joe Forte...Vancouvers first and favourite lifeguard

Angelo Calori....the owner of the Europe Hotel (that beautiful flatiron building in Gastown)

Malcolm Alexander McLean.....First Mayor of the City

Yip Sang...prominent Chinese businessman

Carodac Evans....the first internment in the cemetery

Eric Hamber.....Lt Governor of BC

What should I bring:

A camera, it doesn't matter if you have a cameraphone, a point and shoot camera or a digital SLR, any camera is fine....a tripod if you have one, a spray bottle filled with water and a small whist brush (read below).

Make sure you are comfortable......we will be walking in grass that, in some places could be wet and long because of the maintenance schedule.

Where will we meet?

Outside the cemetery gates at East 33RD AVENUE & FRASER STREET. DO NOT PARK IN THE CEMETERY AS PARKING GATES CLOSE AT 7PM. We have made special arrangements to visit the cemetery as a group. From here we will wander the grounds for two hours or so.

How do I get there?

You can catch a bus. Check your route details on Google Map or at www.translink.ca. You can also drive.....street parking is available on Fraser Street

Wetting down a tombstone with a spray bottle of fresh water can sometimes make carvings stand out much more than when dry. After wetting the stone, allow the surface to dry for a few minutes, leaving the indented lettering damp, which makes it darker and easier to read. You may need to sweep away grass/debris etc from any markers that are flush with the ground.

This should be a "no-brainer" but do not wander around with your equipment taking pictures if there is a committal or graveside service in progress.

If you move any flowers or remembrance items to get your photograph, remember to replace them before leaving.

AT ALL TIMES, PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FELLOW PHOTOWALKERS, YOUR PROPERTY AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS!

We are enthusiastic about photography and lovers of the City of Vancouver and the GVRD....however we are not qualified to answer any technical questions you may have...there may be more skilled members participating on the walk to answer your questions...if not Barry J. Brady has kindly offered to answer any questions by email.

AFTER THE MEET-UP DON'T FORGET TO UPLOAD UPTO EIGHT of your most hauntingly beautiful images.

We will be gravely disappointed if you can't join us!

Tracy, Jan and Kelly

Unfortunately I am going to go shopping for new cloths before dinner, as I have no wet/cold weather cloths that fit! Wow, never thought I would say that....then off to Granville Street and Gastown for some reflection...

I was a bit hesitant about cancelling, but now am sure I made the right move...the rain is bouncing 6 inches off the pavement in front of my house!

Good morning Kelly thanks for your hard work. Look forward to Oct 26. For those brave die hards, have fun & shoot, pls make sure to keep yourself warm enough! Can't wait to see the photos!

    September 28, 2013

  • kelly

Is everyone really going to show up? Even with the wind and rain warning? I have spoken to the cemetery manger and we can reschedule for next week when it should be nicer or leave it until October 26 and include "All Souls" into our photo-walk...he has kindly
given us permission to come in and photograph the ceremonies and celebration as a group...Feedback please! IF YOU ARE GOING TO CANCEL DO IT NOW...IT IS INEVITABLE THAT IT IS GOING TO E A MISERABLE DAY TOMORROW!

    • M. Diane R.

I'm volunteering at All Souls and will be exhibiting a memorial too this year. Always an amazing (and heart warming) event. See you there!

Kelly, I need to cancel anyway. Truck is going into the shop for the day. I agree, let's do it later in Oct. All Souls would be an awesome time, but I'll leave it up to the rest!

    October 26th sounds like fun!

I'd love it if we can reschedule, I'm really not too keen on shooting in the rain. (especially the heavy rain forcast for Saturday)

    September 27, 2013

  • Laurel

I was wondering if anyone is driving from Kits? If yes, could I possibly get a ride? Thanks!

Hi everyone....I have cleared the wait list so everyone that wants to attend is welcome. PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE CHANGED THE START TIME. It is supposed to be pouring rain, so if you are not coming remove yourself from the RSVP list.

If it is raining really hard, I will cancel it on Saturday morning and reschedule it very soon. I know there are some die hards out there that will go out in any weather and if you choose to do so, the photo album will be available to you. As many of you know, I'm not crazy about being in the rain, but will (hopefully) go ahead with the walk because there is such a huge interest and virtually no cancellations...even though you are all aware
of the forecast...so if I am committed to it I hope you are too....I don't want to get there and find only 10-15 people! i would prefer that our efforts in planning planning these photo-walks can be enjoyed by a larger group than that!

Bring a big umbrella, maybe we can pair up and assist each other and keep dry!

Thats fine, I don't think you'll have a problem finding us...just remember to check here...in case we decide to cancel...

I'm also attending the Long Exposure seminar at Langara. I'll be late, too....

Hi Everyone, for those that have also signed up for the dinner after the walk, this is just a reminder that if you decide to opt out of the walk for whatever reason, we still need to know if you are going to join us for dinner. If not, please remember to change your RSVP to a No for the dinner as well.

    September 26, 2013

  • Doris F.

Hi Kelly, will you keep the dinner reservation for 7 pm, now that the time for the shoot has been adjusted? Thanks.

    September 26, 2013

Yes, Doris, we are hoping so, Jan will be making the arrangements sometime today....we will keep everyone posted about any updates

This walk seems so popular, why can't we hold this over 2 days sat/sun?

    September 22, 2013

    • kelly

Byron, I am in Montreal but have been monitoring the Photowalk...I am going to contact the cemetery manager and see if he will allow any more to attend...if not, we will do it again in a few months.....

Hi folks, someone interested in rent a car to invite the rock mountain ?

    September 9, 2013

    • Daniel

To take pictures for sure !!

Where's rock mountain Daniel? I know Rocky Mountain in Banff!

Hi Everyone, this is just a reminder that we need to know about everyone who is attending. There are a couple of people who bring guests along on the walk, but don't indicate that on their RSVP. In this instance we DEFINITELY need to know as we are only allowed 50 people. So, if you are one of those people, please go in and change your RSVP. It makes it both unfair for us (as we get the wrong counts for restaurant RSVPS and it's unfair for anyone on the waitlist). We know who you are so please don't make us slap you with a wet noodle!!

If we are on the wait list, does that mean we can't join?

    2 · September 2, 2013

    • Doris F.

Hi Kelly, thank you so much for this excellent clarification. I am pleased to know that people on the waitlist are automatically moved up when someone on the Yes list cancels. Also, please know how much your work as organizer is appreciated. I have been on some really great photo walks with this group and look forward to more in the future. You organizers are awesome!

      I conquer...

      September 4, 2013

  • Jan

Please also keep in mind, if you are already on the "Yes" list but don't show or change your RSVP you will be marked as a No Show due to the waitlist and the number of people we have made arrangements to bring. So please have the courtesy to change your RSVP if you don't expect to attend.

    September 2, 2013

  • kelly

Wow....I can't believe the quick response! This will be rain or shine, in fact I am actually hoping for a bit of rain...would make it very interesting...make sure you are available for an earlier start time. We will adjust the time week of if necessary..
