Nitobe Memorial Gardens UBC ($7.00 Admission Fee)

THIS PHOTO-WALK HAS BEEN REQUESTED BY SO MANY OF YOU...SO FINALLY, HERE IT IS. WHAT BETTER TIME TO VISIT THAN ON A SUNNY DAY WHILE THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS ARE IN BLOOM....

Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional Japanese Tea and Stroll garden located at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Nitobe Garden is considered to be the one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America and among the top five Japanese gardens outside of Japan, the Nitobe Garden includes a rare authentic Tea Garden with a ceremonial Tea House.

"I am in Japan," was the reaction of the Crown Prince (now Emperor) of Japan as he walked through UBC's renowned Nitobe Memorial Garden. The exquisite work of art was created out of two-and-a-half acres (one hectare) of pristine forest by landscape architects and gardeners recommended by the government of Japan.

The garden honours Inazo Nitobe [masked]) whose goal was "to become a bridge across the Pacific." Among many other memorials to him is his portrait on the 5000 yen note. Each tree, stone and shrub has been deliberately placed and is carefully maintained to reflect an idealized conception and symbolic representation of nature. There is harmony among natural forms - waterfalls, rivers, forests, islands and seas - and a balance of masculine and feminine forces traditionally attributed to natural elements. Realizing that many native trees and shrubs could be trained and pruned in typical Japanese fashion, the garden's creators incorporated them as unique features. Some maple and cherry trees and most of the azaleas and iris were brought from Japan. A place of reflection, where each step reveals a new harmony, the garden is designed to suggest a span of time - a day, a week or a lifetime - with a beginning, choice of paths, and ending.

1) What do I need: You will need a camera....It doesn't matter if you have a point and shoot camera or a Digital SLR, either one is fine. The important thing is to make sure you have charged the batteries and it is ready to go. If you have a DSLR, think carefully about what you will shoot, don't bring a whole backpack of lenses and kit, you will have to carry it for 2 hours. A tripod may be useful. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, you will be walking for 2 hours on gravel and wood chip pathways and crouching down, bending over and getting into all sorts of positions for that one amazing shot...so be sure you are comfortable.....and do I dare say it "Don't forget your sunscreen"

2) How do I get there: To get to UBC Nitobe Memorial Garden via public transit, take a bus onto campus and arrive at the main UBC bus loop. (www.translink.ca). Walk south between the General Services Administration Building (GSAB) and the War Memorial Gym to the Trolly bus loop on University Blvd. Transfer to the C20 community shuttle at Bay 14. The C20 shuttle bus runs daily with 20-minute frequency during operational hours of our Gardens Monday - Saturday. http://planning.ubc.ca/vancouver/transportation-planning/transportation-options/transit/new-community-shuttle-routes-ubc

Parking: Across the street from Nitobe Memorial Garden is the Fraser River Parkade at 6440 Memorial Road. Parking in this parkade is paid. Current rates can be seen on UBC’s Parking Website linked below. Check UBC Parking's website for additional parking options and prices on campus. Additionally free parking can sometimes be found along NW Marine Drive. - See more at: http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/hours-and-directions#sthash.AB66sGKp.dpuf

We will meet at the entry to the garden.....THERE IS A $7.00 ADMISSION FEE (plus tax)

Thanks everyone for coming yesterday! I hope you all enjoyed it...Even though it was smaller than I thought it was so beautiful...and the cherry blossom trees were at their peak...which was my whole purpose for planning this when I did. I loved it's tranquil, calming feel.....I could have stayed longer...but lunch beckoned!

Glad to have met Tracy and Kelly. We're late but the views are stunning. Hope we arrange another meet-up before we lose the weather.

Just wondering wether the early morning will be an issue for the members, as this garden takes some time to get to, and 9:30AM is relatively an early time in the morning for a meet up.

    April 9, 2014

    • Jason H.

Yes, I went there last Sunday and people were all over the place. Just a small concern for the people who live far away. Your clarification upon this matter is highly appreciate!

There will probably be other folks arriving when we get there, the entry is a very small area, so maybe we should purchase our tickets and meet inside the main gate to do the group photo....

Sorry...something has come up. I won't be able to get there Saturday morning. Have fun! :-)

I was wondering if I could get a ride with someone to Nitobe? I live at 3rd and Arbutus and would be happy to buy a latte for the driver.

I was there today since I can't make it Saturday -- and, agree with Kelly, it's absolutely stunning.

I was out at the gardens today.....it was stunning. If you have never been there before, the entrance is a bit tricky to find....once you park in the Fraser River Parkade ($7.50 all day) walk out of the parkade ,turn left and walk towards the wall....go right and walk along the path until you you reach the entry gate.

If you've never been to the LaConner Tulip Festival on a Saturday, I suggest you go real early because the crowds are horrendous! It seems that 1/2 of Seattle comes up for it. Garry

I think Cherry Blossms will end in 3 weeks, right?

      April 8, 2014

    • kelly

The early ones are finished already Candy..it also is very weather dependant...rain and wind will make them fall earlier.

This one sounds like a good one but parent duties come first. Enjoy.
