Here are the two problems sets if you didn't have a chance to make it to the meetup or finish them:

    Shopping Problem

    Health Problem

I hope everyone enjoyed them and I look forward to doing this kind of thing again. If anyone has any good ideas for some more problems in the future don't hesitate to share them with the group or contact me if you would like to collaborate.

April 25th looks like the date. Tommy's going to update this soon. Can you guys let me know if this is an issue?

    April 1, 2013

  • Tommy C.

We can do this the first week of april or the last week of april. Thoughts?

    March 18, 2013

    • Fraser A.

      Last would be better.

      March 18, 2013

    • Balash

I prefer that last week as well.

    @Fraser:
Are you planning to send out a survey to all who RSVPed?

    March 5, 2013

    • Dennis L.

Sorry, hectic week. Survey Looks good. I might have some time this weekend to go through the exercise of automating an Amazon or Groupon flow. Will try to time box it

      March 15, 2013

    • Fraser A.

Yeah I'm just finishing up all my midterms and projects as well. I looked at groupon and I think amazon would be better. I was thinking of making like a shopping list of things to purchase to start.

      March 15, 2013

  • Fraser A.

I met with Dennis L. last week and here are some of the things we discussed:

    1. What kind of project we will use.
    - We agreed something simple and mainstream such as amazon or groupon. Once decided, we will do some trail blazing on the project and release it shortly before the event. We still encourage any ideas you have on this.

    2. What kind of tasks will be assigned.
    - The main focus of this discussion centered on the fact that different technologies do things differently. We want a level playing field for all participants and technologies. An example of this would be handling ajax events in selenium vs casper. We thought Julien escueta might be able to provide some insights on this after migrating his selenium test suite to casper at RESAAS.

    3. How will we score the competition.
    - A few considerations we thought of were readability, reliability, and mechanism. The first two are self explanatory. For the last, are you selecting page elements or sending web requests?

  • Fraser A.

Friday morning sounds good. What time? Hopefully you can get some insights from some of the SDETs over there by then. Feel free to bring anyone along.

    February 26, 2013

  • Tommy C.

Why don't you guys meet and plan it out? I'm sure you guys can handle it!

    February 26, 2013

  • Fraser A.

Tommy would you be able to make it downtown on friday morning? If not, can you let us know if you get any leads by then?

    February 26, 2013

  • Dennis L.

Sure. How about Friday morning or Wednesday lunch?

    February 25, 2013

  • Fraser A.

Hey Dennis how would you like to meet below IQ for a coffee sometime this week and we can do some brainstorming?

    February 25, 2013

  • Dennis L.

    Thanks Tommy.

I'll chat with SDETs here at IQ too see if they had any projects in mind.

I'm in the process of getting in touch with companies to see if we can get some complicated scenarios for some of the challenges. Stay tuned!

Do we have a project in mind yet?

    February 20, 2013

Will March 6 work for everyone?
I'll take care of pizza and snacks

I would like to join it. When is it?

    February 18, 2013

  • Tommy C.

I think this should be pretty fun and everyone can learn something at the end of the day. I'll get in touch with Cang from iQ to set up a date.

    Cheers,

    Tommy

I see your point about the competitive aspect of the hackathon driving creative thinking and pushing the limits. It makes a lot of sense.

I don't really know if standardization of tools and frameworks will be an issue but we can always do a quick survey and see what other attendees think about it.

Let's figure out a project and date. I was thinking end of February. Thoughts?

    February 12, 2013

  • Fraser A.

The coding dojo sounds like a lot of fun. I'm assuming that's how code ninja's are born? But it seems to focus more on collaboration than competition. For this event I had imagined a more competitive environment like a real hackathon to really push the creativity and performance of the participants.

One of the problems I discussed with tommy was standardization with respect to limitations on frameworks and tools. I'm not sure how big of an issue it would be. It would ultimately depend on the format chosen.

Does anyone have a suitable web project in mind? I was thinking the most efficient approach would be an existing project by one of our members. For example, Julien Escueta just did a presentation on RESAAS automation with Casper. That project would have a whole suite of automation tests already written... Follow me? In return, the project supplier would get free code :)

    February 12, 2013

  • Dennis L.

I like your idea about a TDD approach for an interview style problem.

Another format that might work is a coding dojo.

We pick a web project we want to write automation tests for.
The tasks can be of increasing complexity:
    - static content
    - login page
    - more complicated scenarios

No limitations on testing frameworks or tools.
Both pair programming and solo should work.

    When is it?

    February 7, 2013

  • Fraser A.

I would like to know what you guys think?

    February 7, 2013

  • Fraser A.

Not yet. Tommy and I were tossing around a few ideas. I was thinking either a TDD approach like an interview style problem or just automating as many website operations as possible within a given time.

    February 7, 2013

  • Dennis L.

Do you guys have a specific format for the hackathon in mind?
We can host it at iQmetrix.
