Vancouver Convention Centre

We had a record attendance of well over 40 people for the Public Library meetup! That is great, but now I need to think about where we can meet if we're such a large group again, especially in the winter when we need to be indoors. AND ideally not spend a ton of money on admission fees. Also, accessibility to public restrooms, coffee, and food is important, in about that order. If you have any ideas for venues that meet these criteria, please post them in the discussion section under "Ideas for future sketching meetups". Thanks!

But I have a good idea for this next one: The Vancouver Convention Centre. It's a neat piece of architecture, lots of people coming through, you can also stand inside by a large window and draw the outside views, and there are public restrooms.

There is also the option of walking over to Canada Place and drawing in there, or drawing the Vancouver Convention Centre from Canada Place.

Let's meet at 11:00 a.m. outside the Convention Centre at the bright blue "Drop" sculpture, which is on the northeast corner of the seawall that surrounds the Convention Centre (see photo), so we don't draw undue attention to ourselves before we head inside. Security guards sometimes needlessly worry about sketchers, and if there are 40 of us again, we turn into a large, threatening crowd. I think it's best we meet outside to say hello, and then spread out to do our sketchy deeds.

Bring your own drawing materials. You may also want to bring a small folding stool for this one, or else you may have to lean against a wall or railing to draw.

Below is a photo of "The Drop" where we will meet. It will be hard to miss, unless the sky is blue on that day. And let's meet at the end at 1:00 pm just inside the East entrance of the Convention Centre, there's a large lobby. At least we'll be done drawing then, even if security threatens to kick us out ;)

Canada Place was OK, but it was good compromise given that the Convention
Centre was closed. Drawing fellow participants very enjoyable. Liking the group dynamics very much.

We are meeting up again at 12:45 at the totem poles in Canada place lobby. Ground Floor towards the back of the large foyer/hall.

Convention centre closed for private function. Oops. We are in Canada place now. Some of us are drawing near the bar on the hotel lobby (2nd) floor, there is public seating near the windows.

    Hello Sigrid,
I would like to attend but have another function that starts at 1:00, so I think I will be missing most of you again, but I am still going to be there for part of it. Sounds like fun and hopefully the weather will be nice out. See you all then.

Yes, just come when you can make it. If it's nice out, and above 13.5 degrees (not likely) I may even draw outside ;)

No worries, I will set something up for the afternoon of the 18th, Becky. Then I will be away on the weekend of the 25/26.

Sigrid, has the group had problems with security guards before? That doesn't sound right at all... public assembly is permissible in public spaces.

Also, I was half joking, especially about "large, threatening crowd". Still, I'd rather meet outside right at the beginning, and this is an easy sculpture to find.

      I'll be there. More fun!
