Simple Yet Powerful WordPress Hacks Workshop

In spite of appearances, WordPress is a powerful CMS with virtually endless possibilities for customization. With a basic understanding of how the platform works and how to edit themes you can take your plain old WordPress site and make it extraordinary.

In this workshop web designer and WordPress Adept Morten Rand-Hendriksen (www.pinkandyellow.com and www.designisphilosophy.com) demonstrates some simple yet powerful WordPress theme hacks that anyone can implement to bring that extra little something to their site. The rundown of topics are not finalized yet so feel free to post suggestions on what he should cover in this forum thread: http://www.meetup.com...

Preliminary Topics:

  • Swap out the header text for an image?
  • Enable the new WP3.0 menu feature?
  • Add a second custom menu?
  • Add your tweets without a plug-in?
  • Add a second sidebar?
  • Widgetize a new area?
  • Adding thumbnails to posts with the built in thumbnail feature?

** These are preliminary topics that may change in the coming weeks.

Prerequisites
These hacks are implemented on a self-installed WordPress site. Members must have their own self installed WP site in order to implement these hacks. Basic knowledge of editing template files would be beneficial.

Is it possible to have a second workshop? There are already 22 people on waiting list. If you could kindly arrange for a second class some time this month or next month, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

@mamush Unfortunately I don't have time to do a duplicate workshop on this topic now. We might consider doing one in 6 months or so.

However, because this workshop has become so popular I'm working on a plan to publish all or at least part of it online as well so it can be accessed by those not able to attend. More info to come on that front.

Dang! I may not be able to make it this night. Can someone audio or video record it?

In fact, I'll even loan you my HD camera as long as someone agrees to take care of it during the event.

Really a shame that you have so many interested people but can't accomodate any more (I am 17 out of 18 on waiting list) Sure hope all the people who say they will come, do come :)

Sorry for the space limit. If you are not able to get into this workshop, please watch for notes to be published. Thanks.

With the excess demand and the lack of time to run more seminars, I feel privileged to be able to attend. I won't be publishing my notes or thoughts, but if anyone connects via meetup.com, I'll be happy to share what I picked up and how it'll work for me.

Morten demonstrated the flexibility and range of the Wordpress software in such a well prepared presentation that even though most of the content was over my head, the lecture was still entertaining. Amazing accomplishment.

Excellent presentation by Morten! Sometimes all it takes is one little tweek to make a big difference. Morten presented a number of "tweeks".
