General Meetup: WordPress 3.9 and Roundtable

WordPress 3.9 is scheduled to be released April 16th. While this is an odd-numbered release it still has some important new features worth checking out. In the first Roundtable of 2014 we'll do a quick preview of the new features and discuss WordPress in general.

Got a question about WordPress (user, administrator, developer, nothing is too simple or too complicated) bring it and put it to the crowd. We'll collect all the questions at the start of the event and pull them at random. Roundtables are for discussion and learning from each other. It's a great way to socialize and get to know others working with WordPress in Vancouver and beyond.

The event runs 2 hours. If there is interest we may migrate to a food/drink establishment for further socializing afterwards.

Come join us and talk WordPress!

Does anyone know if, be default, WordPress will automatically upgrade to 3.9?

Excellent. It wasn’t clear to me in the documentation what was considered a minor core release.

The auto updates only kick in for the x.x.x releases - security updates and bug fixes. Major point releases (x.x) are not auto updated because they carry with them changes in behavior. That's why even with auto updates you still get people running 3.6 or lower and also why they roll out security patches for older versions.

I loved the presentation! Will there be more with similar formats in future? I already have a list of questions I'm compiling... is there a place where we can submit them (ie. your new WP site)?

    April 14, 2014

    • Morten R.

We will do this on an ongoing basis I think. Seems to work quite well. You can submit questions to the site or just sit on them until the next Roundtable.

Thanks all, very informative. Does anyone recall the name of a company someone mentioned that was running a WordPress biz on the Microsoft .Net platform?

Morten said that info came out from talking to the icanhascheezburger folks when they were up here for WordCamp in 2011. There's some info in the talk at http://wordpress.tv/2... around the 35min mark - it sounds like the back-end for initial content curation is ASP.Net but the blogs themselves are WordPress VIP running on wordpress.com.

Pretty mundane question, but is there anyone in the WRock, SSurrey area you can recommend who can do a little private coaching for a novice in Wordpress? [masked]

Hi Tony, I just emailed you. I live in Tsawwassen. Somewhat close to White Rock / S. Surrey. I might be able to help.

    It was great, thanks Morten.

There are always some interesting questions and answers in the roundtable format - very informative.

It was very good. The plugins for improving security or monitoring sites will be very useful for all the sites I am managing. Thanks everyone for sharing information.

This was the first meetup I was able to attend. It was great! Really good discussion, great people. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to attending more in future.

Thanks Morten! As always, you inspire/facilitate a great exchange of information - after presenting the cool things about 3.9.

Great job Morten, as usual. Too bad 3.9 isn't more exciting to show!

Helping to host another meetup the same night (Design Therapy). Hope we don't clash again.

I just freed up two spots, with regret. Who scheduled a Canucks game while I wasn't looking? Sadly - in more ways than this - I must work that night. Will the meetup be broadcast on Hangouts?

It would be nice to see WP 3.9. I also teach Web Designing by WordPress or Joomla for 1st timers & help out beginners to start their Web Sites.

May I ask someone a favor? Can one video tape it because I will not be in town? Cheers
