Your writing life discussion meetup

  • November 15, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • White Spot Restaurant at Oakridge Mall

A writer’s writing life is a carefully-constructed existence that few who aren’t writers themselves will comprehend.

Be it the time of day we choose to write, how long we write, how we cultivate our ideas, what we give up in order to make time to write, or any other aspect of our writing process and work habits, only other writers can truly understand the lengths we go to to make room for writing in our lives.

And while the writing life can range anywhere from the meticulous to the utterly ridiculous, not only do other writers understand our creative quirks and habits, they appreciate them, at times even going so far as to emulate them in order to become better writers themselves.

The discussion kick-starter questions for this meetup is thus as follows:

“What are the key aspects/practices of your writing life that work well for you?” (we want to learn from your experience)

And:

“What aspects of your writing life are you struggling with?” (maybe we can help!)

Other topics will also be discussed as they arise, in a relaxed, friendly manner.

New members welcome! This is the White Spot located at Oakridge Mall on West 41st Avenue at Cambie.  The reservation is in my name, or mention that you’re part of the writers’ group.  The "Vancouver Writers' Social Group" sign will be on the table.

Hey folks, wanted to come out, but it seems like I woke up to the beginnings stages of the flu. Going to stay home. Hope you all have a great discussion.

Too bad, Isaac. Hope you feel better soon.

I have guests coming from Seattle late on Friday.. but they haven't told me how late! Rather than risk the wrath of Joanne (sounds like a good book title!) and people on the wait list with a no-show (or worse yet arrive with 5 extra people) , I'll leave it for another time when I'm not so busy. This discussing would have really helped!

Ah, most of the time, I'm all bark and no bite. We'll miss you, Alejandra. Hope to see you next time :)

Hello meetup attendees. Please ensure that your RSVP is up-to-date. If you're no longer able to attend, be fair to those on the wait list and change your reply to no ... WELL IN ADVANCE of the start of the meetup. I will NOT be happy with no-shows. See you all tomorrow.

Fridays are usually difficult for me, but I will try to make this one.

I hope you can make it, Norine. If it turns out you can't, please update your attendance well in advance of the meetup's start in case there ends up being a waitlist for attendance.

I'm going to try to get there but probably not for three hours. I'll be on the Canada Line which I don't like at night. But, I need to keep in touch with scribes or be totally isolated from anything outside my computer.

Hi Janet. If you're planning to come, even for a little bit, it's best if you RSVP as Attending to keep the guest list up-to-date. There is limited seating at the venue.

I'm wondering has this group been around for a while and is the venue quiet enough for talking about writing?

I can't attend this coming Meet up on the 15 but would like to consider coming the following week.

This group has been around for almost 2 years, with me as the organizer for almost one year. I'm not entirely sure how quiet the venue will be. I did ask for a quiet corner, but we won't know for sure until we try it our. Hope to see you at a future meetup. I generally schedule them ever 2 weeks.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
