A unique evening for the VanUE community hosted in the inspiring and innovative Fluevog flagship store.  The evening is meant to inspire, motivate, and get you to think about design in a different way.  Four presenters will give short, concise presentations that will take about 7 minutes each on a variety of design topics from personas to typography.

At the end of the presentations, there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions to our amazing presenters.

Special Bonus: Our friends at Fluevog are offering a special VanUE 15% discount for shoes purchased that evening!

Presenters:

  • Ryan Opina: With over 12 years of experience working in the Human Factors and UX groups at Nokia and Microsoft Game Studios, combined with an MBA in Design Strategy from California College of the Arts, Ryan’s unique perspective guides Engine Digital’s Insight & Planning practice. Directing the discovery, research, and planning process, Ryan helps the agency team to better understand the user needs and behaviors that influence strategy. Through his work, Ryan finds new ways to apply existing and unconventional approaches to interaction, function, and content, developing memorable customer experiences that set the foundation of a connected brand.

  • Lauren Bacon: Lauren is a seasoned entrepreneur, published author, business coach, and lifelong learner/teacher. A veteran online strategist with a background in design, she co-founded Raised Eyebrow Web Studio, a  digital agency serving nonprofits and other change makers, in 2000. More recently, she has been applying her collaborative, inquiry-based approach to her coaching and consulting work with startups, entrepreneurs, and leaders of all stripes – asking lots of questions, and employing her unending curiosity to help people align with their purpose and realize their visions.

  • Dr. Shelley Gruendler is a typographer, designer, and educator who teaches, lectures, and publishes internationally on typography and design. She holds a PhD and an MA in The History and Theory of Typography and Graphic Communication from the University of Reading, England and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Graphic Design from North Carolina State University, United States. Shelley has presented at TypoBerlin, ATypI, TypeCon, and How; has published articles in Communication Arts, Eye, How, Slanted, and Step; and has judged international typography for Communication Arts and Canadian book design for the Alcuin Society. She is proud to live in the Canadian Typographic Archipelago but she still loves to travel the world as the founding director of www.typecamp.org.

I thought that the meetup was ok. I thought some speakers did an outstanding job explaining their insights about UX and I found that some sorta just lost me. Overall, the venue was cool and so was meeting like minded people at the meetup.

I liked the format. A nice way to break up the usual approach to either panels or single speaker events. Although each speaker was speaking from a fairly distinct perspective that didn't appear to be interrelated, I found that the threads of discussion laddered up quite nicely to the idea that emotions drive behaviours and behaviours shape design. Nice recruiting Selma. ;-)

    Loved Ryan and Lauren's talks.
Some presenters could have been more prepared.

Some fun, short talks. A few problems with the equipment, but speakers dealt with it gracefully.

I think your right the system processes it based on wait list. Two issues are that it tells you to 'Act Quickly' in the email after stating that a spot has opened up. To add to the issue the system takes a few minutes to 'process' and fill the available spot whilst users frustratingly try to claim the opening. UX 101 Meetup!

The "system" selects who's next. The message in the email is just confusing.

I was hoping to make this but I have too much work to do tonight. Hope everyone has a good time!

This is silly. Spots keep opening and I follow the meetup link to register yet remain on the wait list. 3 times today! Frustrating!
