Networking: 5:30 - 6:00pm Event: 6:00pm - 7:30pm Note: This event will sell out! Make sure you RSVP early! Modern Mobile Design Language: from Transportation to Pixels - Metro for Windows Phone 7 This is a design discussion on the thinking and inspiration for our Windows Phone design language, called Metro. We’ll tell the story of how we were inspired by classic visual design and transportation graphics systems, how the language has evolved in software that Microsoft has developed over the last 10 years, the lessons we’ve learned to along the way to create a modern UI style that is familiar, approachable, and extensible. Cost We are going to be charging everyone $10 to attend the event. All money collected for the event will be used to purchase appetizers at the social event after (we will run it at zero profit). Hopefully you will join us for a fun evening! Our Speakers Albert Shum Albert Shum directs the Mobile Design team at Microsoft, in Seattle & Redmond. The team consists of interaction, visual, motion, industrial and brand designers along with user researchers & design program managers working in an open studio. Our team collaborates with engineering & business partners to create integrated mobile experiences for our consumers. Prior to Microsoft, Albert led the convergence of technology and sports efforts at Nike resulting with the digital Nike+ experience. Albert has a Master's of Product Design from the Stanford University, a Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and the General Management Program from Harvard Business School. In his spare time, Albert is usually found riding his bike. Mike Kruzeniski Mike is a Creative Director in the Windows Phone design studio, leading the Windows Phone Apps team. The designers on the Apps team work with 3rd party developers, external design studios, and Brands to help them create beautiful mobile experiences for the Windows Phone platform. Before Microsoft, Mike was with Nokia Design's Insight + Innovation team. The I+I team, based in Los Angeles, is Nokia’s incubation studio, developing new ideas and products, as well as next generation design concepts. Mike has a Master's degree in Interaction Design from the Umea Institute of Design in Sweden, and a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Emily Carr University in Vancouver, Canada.

It was inspiring to hear about the design process and the evolution of UI over the years that lead them to the design of the Windows Phone 7.

The presentation was more of a case study into how Microsoft took major risks into going forward with an unconventional design process different from the other competitors in the mobile market.

The presentation was inspiring to the community in that it goes to show how an experience team dealt with lobbying for a design process around user experience and carried it through the whole project to result in the Windows 7 phone.

This was incredibly inspiring, and also encouraging that a product can evolve around the user experience, rather than the actual features. Speakers were entertaining and delivered a powerful and aesthetic presentation (no bullets!)

Excellent presentation! Thanks to the organizers and the 2 excellent speakers. Can you publish the slide deck if possible?

If anything, it was a bit high-level. Would have liked to have seen some nuts and bolts rationale for the small interaction design decisions for the phone 7 OS. But it was quite a good presentation overall.

This was an exceptional meetup. The subject matter was inspiring and very relevant (presentation from the design leads of a major mobile product released the day before? Amazing). The presenters were insightful and surprisingly candid, and they avoided anything that smelled like a sales pitch.

Loved it. Want more VanUE content of this caliber and would happily continue paying for it.
