Exploring the research toolbox: what to use, when and why.

  • Apr 29, 2014 · 5:30 PM
  • VFS

Networking: 5:30pm to 6pm (VFS)
Event start: 6pm sharp (note that doors will lock after 6pm) to 7:30pm (VFS)

The talk

This presentation will explore the intersection between UX strategy and research:  Anthony will explore what research methods are appropriate for what customers, and when.  We'll talk about how to assess an organization's level of UX maturity, we'll rummage through the UX research toolbox, and we'll outline a framework for how to think about different ways to discover more about your users, leading to better data and insights.

Tara will present a case study from one of our most recent research engagements, where we've used some of these tools to really drive the design of our project from a research-based perspective - on budget, on time and with innovate results.

Anthony Hempell is Director of User Experience for UX Guys, a digital user experience consultancy headquartered in Calgary, AB with offices in Vancouver, BC and Toronto, ON.

Anthony is a passionate advocate of getting users involved in the design process early and often. He got his start in the digital media field with Vancouver’s Columbus Group way back in 1997. Since then he also worked at Blast Radius and as a self-employed UX consultant before joining UX Guys in April of 2012. Anthony has worked on hundreds of digital media projects over the years and is a frequent speaker at user experience and digital media focused events.

Tara Franz

Since completing her Master's degree in Sociology twelve years ago, Tara Franz has conducted dozens of major research projects in both ethnographic and market research. Her work has touched local community associations and organizations like the City of Calgary, as well as large corporations like Rolex, Panasonic, Electronic Arts and Dell.

Tara has embarked on unique research projects that broke into new ways of looking at research participants, the research field and culture. Her work has focused primarily on the ever-growing web culture where people change their way of being. She believes that researchers need to keep in step by evolving their methods and approaches to get at the core of this culture.

For the past three years, Tara Franz has served as the Director of Research for UX Guys.  Starting next month, her newest adventure takes her to California, where she will be joining the User Research team at Facebook.

We are going to be charging everyone $5 to attend the event. (we will run it at zero profit).

Bummed that once again, 2 UX meetups running the same night. Design Therapy is hosting Whitney Hess that night (only 3 spots left, the last time I checked, tho).

I heard a rumour that Whitney Hess (and entourage) will be showing up to the after party. Only rumours, mind you.

Whitney is joining via video for the Design Therapy meetup. Maybe we could create an iPad telepresence robot for her!

  • Lynne P.

Wow, all these events on the same night. Imagine if people actually talked and coordinated things?

I wish I could go. But, I'll be out of town at CHI.
    I'm sure it'll be a fantastic presentation.
