Let's try our Dine Out Alfresco event again while the weather cooperates ...

A little birdie tells me Ambleside Park is a great place for a BBQ/picnic. Theme is Summer Barbeques

I'm making Smores in the fire pit. Bring your own stick. And bring your friends.

Marcia did a great job of getting the common room area of her building to host us.... if anyone has similar facilities in their building- consider using that space.. or if you have a friend who does, ask them to join and host a night! We have a great group of regulars, Jason included, and I hope everyone realizes things do happen and we all try to give warning, avoid mishaps, and do our best to plan a perfect event.... but we are all human!

Not 100% sure which weekend- don't want to overkill the whole Thanksgiving theme and everyone be Turkey-ed out! And I know on the Thanksgiving weekend everyone has plans with family and too hard to fit in another meal. How about the weekend of the 20/21? That will give everyone time to be ready for more pumpkin pie and turkey! Don't worry Marcia- I will host it and take care of all the normal hostess stuff!

Hi Marcia again! If you could confirm the night- that would be great- I want to post the night sooner than later as I MAY go all out and do a Turduken! And need to order early and depending on the number of people coming will determine the size I order!

I totally agree with Al.... Bonnie has been great at organizing our group and events for an outside evening and anywhere we lived at anytime of year, outside can be a 50/50 crap shoot... but both times were changed with enough advance warning to have a great night. I don't mind at all jumping in when and where needed to help Bonnie organize events.... I know on Sunday we discussed the next 3 meet ups and have great ideas and themes. I know part of the "idea" of this meet up also is that the members "organize" a meet up a month - I know some members do not have the space in their homes to host an event....one idea is a wine/cheese night... no cooking...less space needed....if that will give other members ideas of events.

I believe the venue was changed cause the weather/sky looked like it may rain..... I think most people "understand" and "accept" that..... I do see your point Jason as per my previous comments as well.... and I think what you "probably meant to say" is that "perhaps we could have taken a chance/risk and it would have turned out okay".... but that's in "hindsight" ~~~~~~~~ And as far as you "not getting any notice".... the comments on the sight need to be followed by all of us... at least a couple of hours before heading out as not all organizers have smart phones, nor is it always easy to change and or edit the postings from a smart phone and sometimes another member or organizer may be requested to post the change of venue or time or cancellations etc... ~~~ Further too, it appears that an email may have been sent out to all those who rsvpd yes. ~~~~~~~~ The reason I am taking this time and effort to respond to your "Complaint" is because I would like to encourage more.... (contd...)

(contd).... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The reason I am taking this time and effort to respond to your "Complaint" is because I would like to encourage more organizers and see more events being organized versus organizers getting "burnt out". ~~~ Jason, my fellow member, I hope you re-consider how your comments might be miss-interpreted, as I know you to be a kind and compassionate man and comments such as "speak for yourself" may come across differently then intended. ~~~ Looking forward to seeing you all soon. ~~~ And Thanks for your pro active participation Jason.

Hi everyone, change of plans ! It's a bit chilly outside for a Beach BBQ so we're changing the venue to Warren's apt in Lonsdale Quay in North Van. He has a BBQ as well :) The address is 138 E Esplanade. It's a 5 minute walk from the seabus if you are taking transit. Just call me when you get there [masked]

We were all provided with ample notice of the change, and it should also be our responsibility to confirm the meet up a few hours before the scheduled time for any last minute changes. We can not control the weather and the changes have always been in advance and quite clear. You have always been very organized in organizing us! And yes I will make the chicken for the hawaiin nite!

Unfortunately I was out all day and wasn't able to change the location on the Meetup event page on my Iphone ... but there was an email sent out to everyone. Jason, maybe check to make sure your email is updated because I think you may have missed some emails too in the past. Thanks !

I agree with Amy. ~~~ (on a slightly diff note, there seems to be a glitch with the meetup site on the times posted in the comments section as Amy's comments were sent out at around 7am and it shows it was posted around 10am and it isn't even 9am yet)! I think Bonnie posted the change of venue about 3 hours before the event time, cause when I checked at about 7pm Sunday it displayed posted 3 hours ago, but now it's displaying 6.41pm so it's probably off by 3 hours... on Toronto time! ~~~ (I'm posting this at 8.56am and wonder what it will display the time showing... After 24hrs or so)

it shows posted at 11:56 am! so Al must be right on EST! Good to know for the future

Thanks for organizing these wonderful dinners once again. ~~~ I did not sign nor join in (didnt think I'd be able to make it cause I was leading a group of people camping and boating on the sunshine coast and it was a fabulous weekend with a fabulous group) ~~~ but since we arrived back at around 6pm I thought of stopping by after getting some wholesome food from whole foods and then checked the posting and noticed the change of venue posted in ample time but myself and 1 guest were already parked and decided to eat on the beach at my favourite Ambleside Park with an interesting and beautiful sky/view on the beach with a nice 4 person live band playing from 7pm. ~~~ plenty of shady areas every where to hide from possible rain but turned out great ~~~ That's been my experience at this time of the year where it turns out good in spite of the forecast, much like last time as well. ~~~ If I might suggest....? we take our chances (armed with tarps and

Build a single-level fire on the grill. Place the foil packet directly on the coals. When coals are medium-hot, grill is ready. Clean grate.

Remove the chicken from the brine and pat dry with paper towels. Lay the chicken on the grill skin side up, but not right on top of the foil packet. Grill 20-25 minutes, until skin is nicely browned. Flip chicken and continue to grill, covered, another 20-25 more until internal temperature reaches 170-175.

Transfer the chicken to a plate, brush liberally with glaze and cover for 5 minutes. Serve the chicken with the remaining glaze on the side.

Thanks Amy for the recipe ! The Huli Huli chicken was amazing. Actually, better than what I had in Hawaii :) Can you make it again for the Hawaiian Luau ? Lol

      August 20, 2012

2 cups wood chips, soaked in water for 15 minutes and sealed in a foil packet

For the chicken, heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add garlic and ginger and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, 30 seconds). Combine the water and soy sauce in a zip top bag. Add the cooked aromatics and swish to combine. Add chicken and refrigerate for at least one hour and up to 8 hours.

To make the glaze, combine all the glaze ingredients in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. With heat at medium, simmer glaze until thick and syrupy, 20-25 minutes.

Now that we have the grill issue solved....we should also remember that as we are in the park, there are no comforts of a home, ie- plates, utensils (for your dish also), cups, ice, napkins, even water, etc!!!!

Okay, since the grill should be good-to-go (Thank you, Amy!) I'll bring some grillin' stuff. I still have some italian sausages in my freezer (which we never used from the last meetup), plus I'll bring something else. Right now, I'm leaning toward some chicken wings.

Apparently, there is supposed to be 3 public BBQ pits there but it depends on how busy the beach is if they are available that day :) Amy, can you please bring your portable grill just in case ? Thanks !

    August 14, 2012

    • Amy K.

Ok will do.... my grill is large enough for others to share too!

      August 14, 2012

  • Ming C

can anyone confirm that they are bringing a portable grill? If so, this opens up alot of options. If not, then we have to prepare as if this was a picnic.

    August 13, 2012

I was there for the Harmony Arts Festival. I thought I saw public barbeques. Can't be sure though.

I also thought Bonnie said there was grills there.... if not- I will bring one- Bonnie can you please confirm for us!
