Two events in one. For those interested in fashion history and political activism, there is:
1) Radical Rags - The Fashion of Activism http://civilrightsnow.ca
Throughout history, fashion has provided the signage for social, political, and cultural changes within our society. From the fight for womens’ right to vote in the early 1900’s, through womens’ participation in both world wars, to the peace, anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960’s, the womens’ liberation movement which progressed throughout the 1970’s, and the on-going struggle for gay equality, disability and environmental rights of the present day.
These often controversial battles for equality all have a common thread – iconic fashions or signs of the times which identify the cause and depict the generation. Presented by local fashion historian, Ivan Sayers, Radical Rags – a live model fashion show- will showcase fashions which define social movements and cultural milestones from the early 1900’s to present day. Ivan Sayers will take us on a historical journey telling the story of how and why political activism became fashionable.
Tickets are $35. Purchase your tickets at the website above.
2) Portland is calling! Did you know you can go to Portland with Amtrak for $49?
Bring your laptops or iPads and let's plan a trip to Portland. The Amtrak site says "Tax-free shopping, 52 craft breweries (more than any other city in the world), and a culinary scene including restaurants, specialty shops and an entire month of $29 three-course menus in March, is just an Amtrak train ride away. Take the Amtrak Cascades Portland Express, Book Early and Save 25%. Ride in style this winter and spend a few days exploring Portland and all the things that make it one of the most talked about cities in the nation.
Is anyone interested in train travel for a weekend trip? It's a short trip, but for those of us who like trains, short can still be sweet.
Let's meet at the Betty, in the Burrard Hotel, after the fashion show and talk about the possibilities of a trip to Portland.
RSVP and please let me know if you will join me at either event, or both!
