I can't choose just one. I'll get back to this question later.
Ang Lee. He understands personal dynamics so well, particularly between family members. Also, his visuals are often gorgeous.
I can't narrow it down to one. Meryl Streep because she's the best, Kate Winslet, Maria Schrader (German films), a lot of the great British actors (Ian McKellan also gave a knock-out stage performance I had the privilege to see last year), Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, any number of lesser known male and female actors whose names escape me at the moment but who give terrific and subtle performances.
Now there's a hard question, with no one answer. Because it's Vancouver, and it rains a lot? Also, I love anything that transports me to another time. I also like character-driven films.
Videodrome. An absolutely unendurable experience that I would have walked out of it I hadn't been with a friend. For years I would give a film we both saw the "Videodrome award" if it was particularly unwatchable.
I'm relatively new to Vancouver and miss having people to join me at the movies. I also like finding out about films I might otherwise have missed.
