Please join us for our regular monthly potluck for October. The theme for this month's potluck is chili! The Lone Star Veggie Chili Championship is just a month away, so if you make a mean chili, and you're interested in representing the VNA at the Championship, bring a pot of your chili to our potluck. You can, of course, bring a chili just for the sake of bringing chili (or bring a completely different dish if chili's not your thing), but if you'd like your chili to be considered as the VNA official chili for competing at the Veggie Chili Championiship, please register your chili using this form.
The VNA will vote on which chili will represent our group at the championship on Sunday, November 10th in South Austin. The VNA will pay the entry fee and the costs of the winner's ingredients. The VNA chili team will need to make five gallons of the chili on-site at the cook-off in November, but for this potluck, you can just bring a pot you made at home. As for the championship itself, the VNA already has gas and electric cooking equipment for you to use, and we will be soliciting other VNA members to volunteer to join the team and help you win the championship that day!
To qualify for VNA sponsorship, your chili must meet these criteria:
Only 100% VEGAN ingredients allowed. You'll need to bring a list of your chili's ingredients with you. If you are not yet a VNA member, but you're interested in joining, you can do so at the meeting as well.
The chili must be at the potluck NO LATER than 6:30 so we can label it anonymously, and others won't see which one yours is.
The chili must be finished, no active cooking can be performed at the potluck. (You can have it simmering or whatever in a crock pot if you like.)
This is the most important part: You must be willing to compete in the Lone Star Veggie Chili Championship (your entry fee, ingredient and equipment costs will be paid by the VNA), which is in south Austin on November 10th, and prepare five gallons of your chili from scratch on site, with your first batch ready for sampling by the public by 12:00pm. (This usually means getting started no later than 8am.)
We're very relaxed and informal, and we welcome everyone, including families, children, new vegetarians and vegans, and the "veg-curious". Our potlucks are free for anyone to attend, you don't have to be a VNA member.
Please bring a VEGAN dish that can serve 8 plus a serving utensil, as well as your own plate, utensils, and beverage. Also bring your recipe or a list of ingredients to help those with food sensitivities.
