Africana opened a year ago on Madison's east side. For our dinner they will serve an array of West African dishes that are completely vegan.

Appetizer
Alloco
Fresh, ripened fried plaintain served with special habenero pepper sauce.

Entrees
Maffe
A peanut sauce flavored with tomato, peanut butter, onions, and other delicious seasonings served with a variety of vegetables, and a side of white rice or fufu (pounded yam).

Okra Sauce
A thick sauce consisting of freshly prepared spinach, okra, aromatic herbs, and a touch of palm oil served with hearty vegetables and a side of white rice or fufu.

Couscous
A blend of tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic, light spices, and a touch of vinegar and oil served with a variety of vegetables and a side of couscous.

Dessert
Pineapple Fruit Salad
Freshly-sliced pineapple, papaya, and mango.

Beverages
Only water is included.

The $15.00 fee includes everything mentioned above, tax, and the tip. Africana is giving our group a great deal. A meal like this would normally cost over $30! (At least $25 for the meal, $4.50-$5.00 for the tip, and $1.38 for tax.)

Payment Information:
Pre-payment is required. If you would prefer to send a check instead of using PayPal (payment link above), contact me and I will give you my mailing address.

The $15 fee includes a little extra to cover PayPal's fees (74 cents) as well as Meetup.com's $144 annual cost.

Payment Deadline:
Please pay on or before Saturday, March 9th. At the event, I will have a list of people who RSVPed and a list of people who paid. You must be on both lists to attend. If you have any questions or concerns about this feel free to let me know.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel before the payment deadline you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that I agree to pay the restaurant for everyone who has paid me at that point.

Can I RSVP now, but wait to pay?
Yes. As long as I receive your payment by the deadline there shouldn't be a problem. And it will actually help others gauge the interest in this event if you sign up right away. However, if the event fills up, I will remove the RSVPs of people who haven't paid so that others who are interested can attend. (RSVPs can be changed until the payment deadline, if necessary.)

Why can't I RSVP as a 'maybe'?
Meetup.com counts 'maybe' RSVPs as part of the total attending. Since this event has a maximum number, 'maybe' RSVPs could prevent someone else from going. I've made repeated suggestions for them to change the way they count 'maybe' RSVPs, but until they update their software, I won't include the 'maybe' option for events that have a maximum number.

What about kids?
Kids are welcome, but pay full price. Exception: Small children who will only nibble off of your plate can attend at no charge. Include all kids as guests when you RSVP and write their ages in the notes area of your RSVP.

This is a vegetarian group. Why is the dinner vegan?
As a vegetarian, it's not unusual for me to be at an event where there is little (or nothing) for me to eat. This group has members who are vegetarian, vegan, and just interested (among others). Everyone is welcome. I think it's important for our events to have a menu that not only has something for everyone, but where everyone can eat everything.

It's too bad we didn't get to try the fufu and that the fruit salad wasn't 100% fresh. My favorite things were the maffe and the alloco!

I think our large group overwhelmed the restaurant staff. The food took a long time to come and when we left, after two hours, they were still planning to bring out more entrees. The food we did eat was excellent and I enjoyed the company. I should add that it was so noisy in there it was hard to hear and be heard.
    •  Food was very good. The service was pretty good, too, but the kitchen was slow to get the food out, maybe because we had such a large goup. Overall, because the food was so good, I would go back again.
    •  The fried plantains and the maffe were great, but the fruit cup was disappointing. I was turned off by how long the dinner took, but I still had a good time.

We really enjoyed the food! The service was very friendly. It seemed like it took a bit between courses, but it was totally fine because it gave us more time to chat with people at our table. We had a ton of fun.
    •  This was my first meetup, and it was a great experience! Everyone at my table was friendly and interesting to talk to, and the food was delicious.

This was probably the only meetup so far I'd complain about (it wasn't you Dave! I'm sure you did your usual impeccable job of organizing). The service, it hardly needs saying, was sloooooow. The food was decent, but very scanty (we kept finding ourselves strictly rationing our portions so no one at the table go shortchanged), although the last minute vegetable dish definitely helped. I'm guessing they realized partway through that there wasn't enough food so they made an additional dish, so that was appreciated. As far as number of people this place could accommodate- the space is pretty large, but maybe the staff can't handle so many diners at once. I'm not sure if I'll return there on my own or not- probably only if someone else asks me to. :-P
    •  We had a record turnout with 47 people (including three kids). The food was good and the servers were very nice, but the food took longer to bring out than I expected. I think the restaurant was not accustomed to serving such large groups. It was also disappointing that fufu wasn't served. I had ordered that on a previous visit and it was really good.
    •  The food was adequate enough. I wouldn't say that I loved the food, though, and they failed to give us enough to eat. It took a very, very long time. I was also disappointed that we were constricted to just our tables for conversations with everybody, because I did not have the chance to meet many people.
    •  The service was poor if not non-existent. The food was un-remakable, the portions were tiny and it took forever it to get to the table. Served "family-style" with no serving utensils? Whats up with that? I gave 2 stars instead of only 1 because we had an awesome group of meetup attendees! I love this group, and this restaurant's extremely poor performance is in no way a reflection of group.
    •  I thought the food was average - and my VEGAN friend became ill afterwards - questioning the VEGAN'ism of the food. The wait time between dishes was unacceptable. The dessert was literally CANNED fruit cocktail (with brown grapes) and mango cut into it. The wait staff were very good about keeping our water glasses, caraffes full. The company at my table was great - however, 6 of the 8 had never been to a MEET-UP event and all left before the dessert (maybe a good thing). I hope they return, but I fear they will not.
    •  The service we did get was great - the manager was very friendly and accomodating. Unfortunately, there was just not enough service and interaction w staff. The food we ate was great - again, just the timing and communication was not enough. Over promised - under delivered - I'm guessing the experience would have been "Great" if there were half our size of group. I'll still go back to the restaurant.

The food was very good , but the time that it took to get the food was too long. Also, it was very loud and hard to talk with people even at our own table. I would suggest an opportunity for people to introduce themselves, discuss a topic, or something where I could actually get to meet more people.
    •  I enjoyed the food and also enjoyed the company; however, the service was exceptionally slow and the restaurant seemed relatively disorganized. Also, I was disappointed with the fruit cup, which was mostly canned fruit.
    • Kaaren & Tom (+1 guest)
Group was great. The food that we ate was above average. Service was SLOOOOOOW. After 2 hrs, we had only been served the appy and part of the main course. Didn't get to eat half the meal as we had other plans that night :(
    •  Very tasty. I enjoyed the difference in menu. I would have liked to have a green salad with the menu
