Delicious Vegan Desserts - Cooking Class

  • Jun 25, 2011 · 2:30 PM
  • Arboretum Cohousing

This event is now full. If you would like to join the waiting list send me an mail.

Please include your phone number so I can contact you quickly if there's a cancellation. Signing up for the waiting list does not commit you to going if space becomes available. There is no fee involved in joining the waiting list.

If you are interested in this event it's important to add your name to the waiting list even if you think it's unlikely you'll be contacted to go:
1) There could be last-minute cancellations and the people ahead of you on the list might not be able to go -- or I might not be able to get ahold of them.
2) It gives me a better indication of the interest level, which can help in planning future events.

Join us for an afternoon in celebration of your sweet tooth.

Cara Moseley is the dessert chef at The Green Owl, Madison's only vegetarian and vegan restaurant. The desserts there are consistently amazing and Cara agreed to teach us how to make some delicious, vegan desserts: peanut butter mini cakes filled with chocolate ganache, rustic fruit tarts, and lemon bars. This will be a hands-on lesson and everyone will get to take their desserts home (or eat them before leaving).

The $12 event fee includes all ingredients.

RSVP/Payment Info:
Pre-payment is required to RSVP (see exception below). Meetup.com automates this process when you pay via PayPal. If you want to pay by check, contact me and I will give you my mailing address. I will manually update your RSVP as soon as I receive your request, but since our events fill up quickly, out of fairness to other group members I will remove the RSVP if the check is not received within four business days.

Special honor system exception: If you have been in the group for a while and have a history of attending and paying for events without any problems you can contact me about paying me at the event. This accommodation is provided as a convenience -- you are still responsible for paying even if you do not attend.

Important Note: I will manually update the RSVPs of people who pay by check or use the honor system, but it's possible the event will fill up before I check my email. If that happens I will add you to the waiting list.

Fee Disclosure:
The $12.00 fee includes a little extra to cover PayPal's fees (65 cents) as well as Meetup.com's $144 annual cost.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel on or before Tuesday, June 21st you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that we are purchasing ingredients based on the number of people attending as of the deadline.

What about kids?
Kids who are old enough to independently participate in the food preparation are welcome to attend. Kids pay full price.

This is a vegetarian group. Why is the event vegan?
This group has members who are vegetarian, vegan, and just interested. Everyone is welcome. I think it's important for our events to accommodate all those diets.

This was my first Meetup and I'm really glad I tried it. Everyone was very friendly and the presenter did a great job. It's about an hour drive for me, but worth it and I'm looking forward to participating again. I really liked the hands on demonstrations. I plan to try making the Lemon Bars today only because I feel confident after actually viewing the process. My only concern was the time factor, which has already been mentioned.

In general it was fun, I think next time the group needs to be smaller though. Also think it would have helped to show how to make the dough, and then have dough ready, just to make things go faster...it was a bit longer than I thought it would be.

The class was longer than I expected and I had to leave after 3 hours due to another commitment, so I didn't get to try all the desserts. I've been to a lot of cooking classes where 4 - 5 dishes are made in 2 to 2.5 hours max so I know it can be done . . . that said, they weren't interactive like this one. The tips were great and the desserts I tried were awesome; I will definitely be putting the recipes to use.

Unfortunately, I couldn't stay until the end. I think we need to tweak this process a little to move it along a little better. Maybe only two desserts? Or demonstrate a technique (like putting a dough together) but having some pre-made? I don't have a ready answer. I love Cara's style and always love seeing her work. And to me, it was worth the cost of the program just to get Cara's recipes! I just wish I knew how to make these classes not go on much past two hours. On a more positive note, I enjoy talking with other members during down times. Thanks, Cara and Dave for all of the work that goes into these programs.

I was disappointed that I had to leave before it was over...and not try the desserts. But I got a lot of great tips and great recipes that I will definitely be able to use at home. I look forward to more events like this.

It will be about 2 hours of class, but there will be time after for socializing and eating the desserts.

Dave, do we know how long the class is supposed to last?
