Vegan Dinner at Wah Kee

This event is now full. If you would like to join the waiting list send me an email.

Please include your phone number so I can contact you quickly if there's a cancellation. Signing up for the waiting list does not commit you to going if space becomes available. There is no fee involved in joining the waiting list.
If you are interested in this event it's important to add your name to the waiting list even if you think it's unlikely you'll be contacted to go:

1) There could be last-minute cancellations and the people ahead of you on the list might not be able to go -- or I might not be able to get ahold of them.
2) It gives me a better indication of the interest level, which can help in planning future events.

Wah Kee is a vegetarian- and vegan-friendly restaurant featuring Chinese cuisine. Everything at this event is vegan and the food will be served family style.

RSVP/Payment Info:
Pre-payment is required to RSVP (see exception below). automates this process when you pay via PayPal. If you want to pay by check, contact me and I will give you my mailing address. I will manually update your RSVP as soon as I receive your request, but since our events fill up quickly, out of fairness to other group members I will remove the RSVP if the check is not received within four business days.

Special honor system exception: If you have been in the group for a while and have a history of attending and paying for events without any problems you can contact me about paying me at the event. This accommodation is provided as a convenience -- you are still responsible for paying even if you do not attend.

Important Note: I will manually update the RSVPs of people who pay by check or use the honor system, but it's possible the event will fill up before I check my email. If that happens I will add you to the waiting list.

Fee Disclosure:
The $15.00 fee includes a little extra to cover PayPal's fees (74 cents) as well as's $144 annual cost.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel on or before Sunday, April 6th you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that I agree to pay for everyone who has paid me at that point.

What about kids?
Kids are welcome, but pay full price. However, young children who will only nibble off of your plate can attend at no charge. Please note in the comment section of your RSVP if kids will be joining you.

This is a vegetarian group. Why is the dinner vegan?
This group has members who are vegetarian, vegan, and just interested. Everyone is welcome. I think it's important for our events to have a menu that not only has something for everyone, but where everyone can eat everything.

The soup was not very tasty I thought and rather difficult to eat as the seaweed kept sliding off the spoon. The dessert was nothing I would order again, but the entrees were good. We always enjoy these meet-ups and do want to thank Dave for all his hard work.

I agree with Regina about the soup. I thought it was great. While I might not order the dessert again, I can certainly say that it was a far healthier alternative to almost any dessert I can think of. :)

I agree with the other commenters that the soup and dessert were on the adventurous side, but I really liked the soup. It was unusual, but the seaweed flavor was a plus, in my opinion. The three main dishes were all excellent, everyone at my table seemed to really enjoy them! I especially liked the Premium Tofu with King Mushrooms and Spinach. The dessert was not my favorite part of the meal, the consistency was too much like jello for my liking, but I appreciated getting to try something different. Overall, I would definitely come back here again!

The soup and desert were both suitable for the adventurous eaters, that's for sure. Other than that, I really enjoyed all of the main dishes (ate a little too much!). Having never eaten here before, I am excited to add it to my takeout itinerary.

The soup... no one at our table ate more than a couple of bites, despite all being generally adventurous. It must be a bit of an acquired taste --something not encountered in western cuisine--that would cause someone to like it very much. Even though I kept telling myself "seaweed", my taste buds kept saying "fish", which is a non-starter for me. And it had a slippery texture--which compounded my rejection impulses. The fried tofu was pretty good. It was different than any fried tofu I've had before. I liked it. It was almost like a beer-batter. The 3 entrees were OK, fairly tasty and I really liked the different mushrooms. The entrees were all a little more oily than I would have preferred. The dessert was ordinary and no one at our table finished it. The service was pretty good and the owner seemed genuinely interested in having the event go well. Had a good time visiting with some folks I hadn't sat with in a while.

    Will the food be gluten-free?

    March 18, 2014

    • Dave

I believe it's all gluten free, but I need to get confirmation from the owner. I'll post back when I do.

Everything is gluten free except the curry stir-fried noodles with vegetables.

Phil and I would love to be there. Our integration into Madison's vegan community has been even better than we expected. And thanks to Dave for orchestrating all these meet-ups. We look forward to seeing everyone.
