Vegan Dinner at Chautara 2

This event is now full. If you would like to join the waiting list send me an mail. Alternatively, you can sign up for a duplicate dinner scheduled the day before this one. [ link]

Please include your phone number so I can contact you quickly if there's a cancellation. Signing up for the waiting list does not commit you to going if space becomes available. There is no fee involved in joining the waiting list.

If you are interested in this event it's important to add your name to the waiting list even if you think it's unlikely you'll be contacted to go:
1) There could be last-minute cancellations and the people ahead of you on the list might not be able to go -- or I might not be able to get ahold of them.
2) It gives me a better indication of the interest level, which can help in planning future events.

Located on State Street, Chautara has been a favorite among vegetarians and vegans for nearly 20 years. Chautara's standard menu combines Indian, Tibetan, and Nepali food.

Our menu (all vegan, served family style):

Pakuda
Vegetable fritters in spicy chick pea batter.

Dal
Mixed bean soup. (gluten free)

Garden Salad (gluten free)

Entrees
Tofu Secuwa
Skewered char-grilled marinated tofu, green peppers, and onions. (gluten free)

Seitan Buff
A sautee of seitan and fresh vegetables, spiced with garlic, ginger, and tamari.

Bhat Tarkari
White jasmine rice and vegetables in a flavorful sauce.
(gluten free)

Fruit Salad (gluten free)

Beverages
Water, lemonade, and iced tea will be served with the meal. Other beverages will be available for an extra charge.

The $15.00 fee includes the tax, tip, and everything mentioned above (except the noted beverages). That breaks down to about $11.00 for the meal, plus tax, tip, and a little to cover the meetup.com and PayPal fees. Chautara is giving our group a great deal. A meal like this would normally cost over $35 with tax and tip!

RSVP/Payment Info:
Pre-payment is required to RSVP (see exception below). Meetup.com automates this process when you pay via PayPal. If you want to pay by check,  contact me and I will give you my mailing address. I will manually update your RSVP as soon as I receive your request, but since our events fill up quickly, out of fairness to other group members I will remove the RSVP if the check is not received within four business days.

Special honor system exception: If you have been in the group for a while and have a history of attending and paying for events without any problems you can  contact me about paying me at the event. This accommodation is provided as a convenience -- you are still responsible for paying even if you do not attend.

Important Note: I will manually update the RSVPs of people who pay by check or use the honor system, but it's possible the event will fill up before I check my email. If that happens I will add you to the waiting list.

Fee Disclosure:
The $15.00 fee includes a little extra to cover  PayPal's fees (74 cents) as well as Meetup.com's  $144 annual cost.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel on or before Friday, July 1st you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that I agree to pay for everyone who has paid me at that point.

What about kids?
Kids are welcome, but pay full price. However, young children who will only nibble off of your plate can attend at no charge. Please note in the comment section of your RSVP if kids will be joining you.

This is a vegetarian group. Why is the dinner vegan?
This group has members who are vegetarian, vegan, and just interested. Everyone is welcome. I think it's important for our events to have a menu that not only has something for everyone, but where everyone can eat everything.

My favorite dish was the seitan -- interesting texture and pleasing blend of flavors. The char-grilled tofu was quite excellent, too, in those amazing chunks!

The food was varied, delicious, and generous. The presentation was very nice. The evening started off a little slowly for our table, but when it began, service was very good. And as always, the company was lovely. I love this restaurant and I am so glad they were able to accommodate our group. Kudos to Dave and Chautara!

The room was a little loud, I think. Food was excellent but somewhat skimpy on the servings. I would pay more, or have fewer entrees, if it made a difference in the amount of food served. Everyone takes a very modest portion hoping they don't cause the dish to run out before it makes it to everyone at the table. And, then, it just makes it around. Everyone at the table commented on this. That said--it was excellently prepared food--very pretty as well.
