Camping at Yellowstone Lake State Park (Wisc.)

Join us for our sixth annual veggie group summer camping trip. I reserved a large campsite at Yellowstone State Park in Blanchardville (about 45 miles southwest of Madison). This is the same site as the last three trips because of the lack of mosquitos -- plus, it's a very nice place.

It's a beautiful area where we can hike, bike, swim, and boat (as well as relax). A variety of boats are available to rent: paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. The rental fees range from $7 to $12 per hour, with big discounts for larger blocks of time.

Special day trip info: If you can't stay overnight (or just don't want to), join us for the day on Saturday! Just $14. Kids 10 and up pay full price. Kids 5-9 pay $9. Kids 4 and under pay $4.50. Includes a vegan lunch, a vegan dinner, and vegan snacks. (Young children who are not going to eat anything can attend for free.) Please make a note in the comments of your RSVP of all kids in your party and their ages. (See fee details below for overnight stays.)

Watch the video from a previous trip.

Food Info:
Meals (Saturday lunch & dinner and Sunday breakfast), snacks, and drinks will be provided. All food on the trip will be vegan.

Food Prep:
Each meal will have a volunteer leader who will plan the meal and prepare it with help from other campers. If you are willing to take on this role for one of the meals, please contact me and I will help coordinate.

Although our site isn't guaranteed to be ready for us until 3:00 pm on Saturday, plan on arriving by noon for lunch -- we can eat at picnic tables that aren't on the campsite. I'll coordinate with everyone before the trip.

What is included in the event fee?
Campsite fee.
Food (see above).

What is not included in the event fee?
State Park sticker (see note below).
Camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, firewood, etc.).
Camping equipment can be rented from REI, 7483 West Towne Way, Madison, 833-6680.

What about kids?
Kids of all ages are welcome. Kids 10 and up pay full price. Kids 5-9 pay $14. Kids 4 and under pay $7. Please make a note in the comments of your RSVP of all kids in your party and their ages.

RSVP/Payment Info:
Pre-payment is required to RSVP (see exception below). Meetup.com automates this process when you pay via PayPal. If you want to pay by check, contact me and I will give you my mailing address. I will manually update your RSVP as soon as I receive your request, but since our events fill up quickly, out of fairness to other group members I will remove the RSVP if the check is not received within four business days.

Special honor system exception: If you have been in the group for a while and have a history of attending and paying for events without any problems you can contact me about paying me at the event. This accommodation is provided as a convenience -- you are still responsible for paying even if you do not attend

Important Note: I will manually update the RSVPs of people who pay by check or use the honor system, but it's possible the event will fill up before I check my email. If that happens I will add you to the waiting list.

Fee Disclosure:
The fee includes a little extra to cover PayPal's fees (91 cents) as well as Meetup.com's $144 annual cost.

Refund Policy:
If you cancel on or before Saturday, June 15th you will get a full refund. There are no refunds for cancellations after the deadline or if you do not show up to the event. If something comes up at the last minute you are welcome to find someone else to attend instead of you. The reason refunds are not given after the deadline is that we are purchasing food based on the number of people who have paid me at that point.

Can I bring my pet?
Yes. Dogs and other pets are allowed. Pets must be on a leash no longer than 8 ft and under control at all times. Pets are not allowed in buildings, picnic areas or on beaches or nature trails. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Pets may not be left unattended at any time. Complete rules about pets are on the DNR's website. Please read all the rules about pets before deciding to bring a pet along.

What if it rains?
We'll be there rain or shine.

How long can I be at the park?
We have the campsite reserved from 3:00 pm on Saturday until 3:00 pm on Sunday. The park is closed to non-campers between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am. So, if you want to maximize your time at the park you can arrive at 6:00 am on Saturday and leave at 11:00 pm on Sunday.

Do I need to buy a state park sticker for my car? Will anyone be carpooling?
All cars that enter the park must have a state park sticker, which covers all Wisconsin state parks. The cost is $7.00 for a day pass or $25.00 per year. A single day pass is all that's necessary for camping overnight. You can buy the sticker when you arrive at the park. Before the event I will contact all campers to coordinate the driving. Great meeting new people. The kids made some friends : ) It rained but it didn't seem to bother us! Going to the lake was refreshing with all the heat. Saw an eagle at the beach the way out Sunday.

Just to confirm, the camping trip is on. The rain should pass around lunchtime, but even if it doesn't we'll still have a great time.

Does anyone has an extra 2 or 3 person tent for the night? Larger tent is better, so my baby is more comfortable. I can pay for the rental :)

I have a 3 person tent you could use.:-)

I'd love to get on the waiting list if there is one! I just can't find it on here! Can someone help me with this?

    June 3, 2013

    • Dave

You're all set. It's configured so that I manually handle the waiting list -- meetup's automatic feature doesn't work well with all the different options we have for the camping trip.

      June 3, 2013

    • Kelly

Love it! Thank you so much! :)

Looking forward to planning the Sunday breakfast!

Hi! Sounds like fun but I have a question about the food. Besides vegan, is it possible to have meals without artificial sweetners, soy, gluten, & peanuts? If not can I bring my own food and just pay my portion of the camping fee? I have food allergies and get really sick so I need to be careful. Been having a problem with strawberries too but they're not usually in too many things. Thanks! :) Brenda

Dave, never heard back from you. Too bad, I wanted to attend and don't mind bringing my own food but hated to pay for group food if I wasn't eating it. Maybe next time.

Sorry I missed following up. The limit we have is just for overnight guests on our campsite. You're welcome to grab an individual site (as some others have already done) and then hang out with the group the whole weekend.
