VSDC Restaurant Visit – Woodlands Vegan Bistro

VSDC is looking forward to spending another evening enjoying vegan food with old and new friends alike.

Restaurant: Formerly known as Everlasting Life, Woodlands Vegan Bistro is a 100% vegan restaurant whose extensive menu includes vegan comfort foods (such as mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, collard greens, fried chick’n), sandwiches, raw salads, juices, shakes, smoothies, and desserts. http://www.woodlandsveganbistro.net/.

RSVPSince reservations are based on the number of RSVP’s, please do not RSVP “YES” unless you are sure you will attend.  Please be considerate of the restaurant, VSDC, and the others who want to attend by changing your RSVP if you are no longer able to come. The restaurant sets aside seating based on the RSVP’s, and it hurts the restaurant and VSDC when people do not show up.

Please note: VSDC cannot guarantee seating if you arrive more than 15 minutes late.

Waiting List: If the RSVP’s are full, please sign up for the waiting list if you are interested in attending. Those on the waiting list will be automatically moved up when someone changes their RSVP.

Payment: Everyone will order on their own and pay directly to the restaurant.

Metro station: Woodlands Vegan Bistro is located less than a mile from either the Columbia Heights or Georgia Ave/Petworth metro stations (green/yellow lines).

Accessibility: We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy our events. Please email the event coordinators if you need accommodations.

*Please help VSDC continue to host these monthly restaurant visits and other events by becoming a member of VSDC or renewing your membership. VSDC is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that is sustained by membership dues. If you are not a VSDC member, you can sign up at the event. You can complete a membership application at the event, or fill it out beforehand by printing a hardcopy from our website (www.vsdc.org) and bringing it with you with cash or a check.

VSDC is a clear and consistent voice for improving the lives of all beings through education on the benefits of vegan and vegetarian diets. Sharing food is the bond that brings families together; so is it with our large and growing family. From simply “breaking bread” to experiencing delicious and nutritious vegan foods from around the world, we make your journey easier, enjoyable & meaningful.

I enjoyed my raw, sweet kale, ginger spinach and mac and tofu cheese. I sat next to some really nice people!

    Are you feeling better, Susie?

    April 6, 2014

    • Susie

Thank you Alistaire. I slept for two days straight and feel much better now. Thank you for asking!

Did you really sleep for 48 hours?

Susie, We hope that you and Cleveland are feeling better. Thanks for coming even though you were not well. I am ashamed to say that as a VSDC member, it did not occur to me to step in and assist with the event and it should have. The curse of an introvert.

Thank you Jennifer, we are just glad you came and hopefully enjoyed yourselves. :-)

Both VSDC Restaurant Co-Coordinators were feeling under the weather and were unavoidably late. Normally, attendees are welcomed at the door, given name tags, and given more personal interaction. Please remember that VSDC is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, and the few volunteers do their best with what little time they have. In this case, both volunteer Coordinators came to the event despite the fact we were not feeling well. I hope the friendliness of the other attendees and Woodland's awesome vegan mac 'n' cheese outweighed our tardiness and uncharacteristic lack of sociability.

Susie, I didn't know you & Cleveland were sick. I was there early, at 4:30. Messed around for a while and chatted. Anytime you guys need a greeter, especially at Woodlands where I know the lay of the land, let me know. I'm happy to assist. Hope you're both better.

Thank you Carolyn and Carmen. And Carmen, thank you for your offer to assist in the future. As you know, VSDC is always in need of people to assist!

Thank you everyone for your understanding and well wishes. We hope to see you at the next event.

Thanks for reading my message and clearing things up. I hope you both are feeling better soon.

@Carmen- I didn't know that the coordinators weren't feeling well which explains why they were not there to greet people. Kudos to them for showing up anyway & I will certainly give it another shot in the future.

Good food! I really liked the sweet kale, mac and tofu cheese, and the strawberry cake. Didn't know what was going on when I first got there either, but now I understand why noone was there early to greet people.

I was very disappointed that there was no one to greet us from the meetup. There was only one other person there & they felt the same. I stayed for about 20 mins w/ my guest & then we left. Not what I expected

I got there at 4:30. Left my coat at the table, took care of some personal concerns and came back to the seating area around 4:45 where I saw & connected with Colette. We were the first ones there. It's too bad you didn't stay and eat. Their food is delicious. You would have met some great people. I sure did. The coordinators were there. Cleveland was there before 5pm and Susie was there a bit later. It was fun for me. Hope you'll give it another chance Millie.

I especially liked the pot pie and the collard greens with ginger. With this group, the company is always good.

I was a little surprised by the laissez-faire nature of this Meetup. I guess I am used to having a greeter/organizer bring people together like other group's Meetups I have attended.

Roberta, thanks for the description. I know Woodlands food is very good as was sorry I missed it. However, metro is metro, and SWDC is SWDC.

    April 6, 2014

The food was very good. (It was my first time there and I would definitely go back.) The group members all got their own food as they arrived, though, and were at several different tables. This made it difficult to meet everyone and it was even hard to talk from one end of the table to another. People came and left as they ate. I found it a bit odd that I didn't really meet more than a few people at a meet-up event with so many attending.

    Great food and company!

Sorry that I didn't get to join you tonight. I got stuck down in SW.

Sorry, I did not see the notification about being taken on the wait list on time either. Hope it is/was a good time, and looking forward to further events.

Hi, I just saw at 4:30 that I was taken off the wait list and given a spot at Woodlands today. I didn't expect that and I've already made other plans. I'm sorry I'll miss out, I'm sure it will be a lot of fun!

    April 5, 2014

  • Alistaire

FYI, Metro suggests that I take metro only as far as Cleveland Park where I transfer to a bus. I hope I won't get mocked again.

    March 28, 2014

    • Allison K.

Alistaire - what time are you going? I will be taking the H2 bus from my location (Tilden & Connecticut), and it stops on Porter St just east of Connecticut - that's where you'd get on it. If I get the bus around 5:15, it would put me at the restaurant by 5:30 pm. Let me know if you want to try to ride the bus together. It runs about every 30 minutes.

I thought I had put myself on the wait list as a +1 but this does not appear to be the case. Will this present a problem if I bring my husband who is also a member? If so, I can try to make the next dinner. Thanks!

    April 4, 2014

Another DC vegetarian families group had a meet up scheduled for Woodlands the same day and time before this one was scheduled. The organizer cancelled it though once she found out VSDC scheduled a meet up there too. Bummer, and now a wait list.

    2 · April 1, 2014

    • Susie

Hi Heather, I'm sorry to hear about the conflict, but VSDC schedules these events with the restaurants months in advance, well before they are actually posted on our Meetup page.

I will be coming from somewhere in SW DC, so please forgive me if I am a little late. I'm coming though.

i searched meetup for several weeks for this; finally we have a restaurant! i plan to attend, per Cleveland's prior general advice.

I recently attended a birthday dinner at the Woodlands. The decor, food and service was excellent. I look forward to dining there again. Thanks.

I don't really need any accommodations, but I have a slight hearing problem and poor balance.

The collard greens here may be the best I've ever had.
