Potluck Picnic in Arlington

Join us for a summer potluck and picnic at Bluemont Park in Arlington VA. It's free and open to all.

Please bring a vegan dish to share and bring the ingredients list printed out.  If possible, bring your own reuseable plate, silverware, and cup, to reduce waste. We will supply condiments, napkins, and earth-friendly plates and utensils for those who need them, and a vegan grill too.  Beverages are BYOB, but we'll supply coolers and ice. Note: There is no alcohol allowed on the premises.

In addition to having a covered picnic facility, Bluemont Park is filled with amenities, including a playground, a softball field, a volleyball area (with net), a frisbee golf course, and paved nature trails for walking or biking. There is also a restroom nearby. The location is family-friendly.

This event is co-organized by VSDC and our friends at Compassion for Animals.

When: 11:30am – 4:30pm, rain or shine! Feel free to attend during any portion of this timeframe.

Where: Bluemont Park, 601 North Manchester St. Arlington, VA 22203

The park is just off Arlington Boulevard (Route 50). The closest parking to the picnic shelter is near Manchester Street. You can also park in the lot next to Carlin Springs Road; the picnic shelter is a short walk from there.

To facilitate carpooling, let us know if you need a ride or can provide a ride (including where you are) when you RSVP.  You can also post a message on this event page so people can request / provide rides.

My thanks to the kind peopld who helped me carry stuff to/from my car as it's still a bit tough in view of my injury. Have comment on the event when rating.

Reader's digest: outstanding group of people, stunning food, really really enjoyed the get together. Appreciation for the selfless efforts of those who "pulled the strings" before, during, and after.

Outstanding time. Great company, marvelous food, altogether one of the more enjoyable social experiences I've had in quite awhile. Stunned at how many people showed up (not all from Meet-Up, apparently) and at the diversity/quality of what people brought.

More food than we could all eat! Vegan ice cream was a real treat.

This was my first potluck let alone vegan potluck I have ever attended. I really appreciated the fact that all the food had the ingredients listed and were vegan and in addition to that this event was very well organized. There was such an abundance of delicious vegan food and wonderful people. I also enjoyed that it was Eco friendly also. I can't wait until the next vegan potluck.:)

    Picnic Shelter:
Two pathways to cross a small creek to get to the shelter
    - First path is visible from the parking lot and is a ramp-like footpath. The path will take you across a small shallow creek and curve to the right. Picnic shelter is at the end of the path and is visible once you curve right.

    - Less visible from the parking lot. Head east and walk past the bathroom shelter, there is a pedestrian bridge on your left. It has a few steps to walk up and down.

    - A vegan dish to share, or grill
    - List of ingredients for your dish (great conversation starter and help each other avoid allergies)
    - Utensils, plate and cup to help reduce waste
    - Water for hydration

We will be there rain or shine. See you there!

    Directions:
    * From 50, drive up N. Manchester Street towards 4th Street N.
    * Turn right at the end of N. Manchester Street onto a small driveway (which is the park entrance)
    * Park anywhere in the lot (there are 77 spaces, plenty for all of us)
    * Head towards EAST, you should be able to see a shelter (which is the bathroom)

Very kindand thoughtful offer, Peggy, but I won't have a cell with me. I can probably scope it out when I get there and may go 1st to Pavilion if need be then return to car w/ help. Depends upon whether I make one or two dishes, and how large it/they is/are!

@ Mark, call me once you park and I'd be happy to come help you. I'll give you my number off-line.

Roughly how far from parking to picnic shelter? I might bring two dishes and I temporarily need to use a cane (leg accident). Tks!

    @ Peggy - That's perfect, thank you!

@ David - yes, drive north on N. Manchester towards the end of 4St. N, and park. The picnic shelter is towards the right, short walk from the parking lot. The picnic shelter is nestled between a grove of trees, somewhat diminishing the visibility. Here is a map that Arlington has provided: http://www.arlingtonva.us/depar...
You can also turn on the google satellite map feature and zoom in to get a better idea.

Coming from VA for around 1pm. Welcome to contact me if you want a ride.

    July 18, 2012

  • David

That's a large park. Can you be more specific about where on Manchester? From Route 50 would you drive north on N. Manchester go to the end near 4th St. N and turn right into the parking lot? Can you see the picnic shelter from there? If not, which way do you walk? Thanks.
