Talk by Melanie Joy, author of "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows"

Whether you're vegan or a meat-eater, please join us at the West End Neighborhood Library, near the Foggy Bottom Metro, for a fascinating, one-of-a-kind (and possibly life-changing) presentation.

Dr. Melanie Joy explains—with heart and with research—how powerful cultural institutions influence our attitudes about animals, so that we are repulsed by the thought of eating most species, but eat a few without a second's thought.

The basic schedule is:

6:00 -- doors open; free light refreshments

6:45 to 7:45 -- presentation

7:45 to 8:45 -- Q and A / buy books / book-signing

You can RSVP here or at the Eventbrite page:

I now live in Pittsburgh and I'm in DC this week for business. My schedule has changed and cannot attend this one. It would be great if you did this event in Pittsburgh in the future. I know a few venues that won't charge for use of their space. I can give you contact information.

Kathi, I'd be happy to walk back to the Metro with you, if that helps.

I think I am going to take my chances and drive into the city and hope I find a parking place close to the Library.

Is anyone interested in car pooling? I don't mind doing the driving if someone knows where to go. Or is anyone interested in meeting up at the metro? I have not used the metro in years and am feeling a bit intimidated by it as well as the idea of getting back to my car in the parking lot late at night.

We look forward to seeing everyone Wednesday - tomorrow! The library is three blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metro. There is also a small parking lot at the library, and street parking is not too bad. The event will be eye-opening but relaxing, and the weather will be perfect.
