Dinner at Vege Favor (Islip)

posted by Jennifer G.

Vege Favor offers casual, fast, mostly-vegan dining in downtown Islip. They opened in Oct 2012, and I've heard great reviews from several folks. And I've been there once myself.

UPDATE: to help serve us faster, we're getting trays of food (rather than having people submit individual orders) and the price will be $6.99 per person. If you were planning to order something other than what you see listed below, that's fine, but please let me know ASAP. If enough of you want something else, I'll have Steven adjust the quantities accordingly:

1 tray of General Tso chicken

1 tray of Sesame chicken

1 tray of teriyaki chicken

1/2 tray of curry chicken

1/2 tray of sweet and sour chicken

1/2 tray of pepper steak

1/2 tray of mango chicken

oil-free tray (all steamed, not fried; sauce on the side): 1/2 mixed vegetables, 1/2 chicken with broccoli

4 trays of house salad

39 spring rolls

To prevent waste, rice and lo mein will be given out upon individual request.

Arrive anytime between 6:30 & 7, and join us for dinner and great company!

Bring your own utensils and plate (and something to put your dirty plate & utensils in for the trip home) to minimize the garbage we generate that night.

RSVP by noon Monday Feb 4 so I can give Steven at Vege Favor an accurate headcount. (He will be adding staff Thursday night, according to the size of our group.) Be mindful of VLI's RSVP policy—*please* show up if you say you're coming. Thanks!

Finally, as with all VLI meetups, please follow VLI's policy that "the food is always vegan, and everyone is treated with kindness." (In other words, we expect everyone to order only vegan fare. Even if you or your guests don't think of yourselves as "vegan." Most of Vege Favor's menu is vegan, but not all. For lovers of frozen yogurt, great news: they've added a vegan, soy-based frozen yogurt to their frozen yogurt bar.)

Yeah. I'd say larger quantities because no one should feel self conscience about what they eat. Even if its a couple dollars more....it's still well worth it. Thanks got bringing dishes Jenn and for cleaning them. I had a great time as always.

    • Jennifer G.

Thanks for the feedback, Gary—I was wondering along the same lines, given the ultra-low base price...I bet you're not the only one who *would* be happy to pay more than the base price, to get more than the baseline amount of food? It may take a bit more experimenting, but I'm sure we can find an arrangement that meets everyone's needs. :)

I have to say this was the most inexpensive vegan meal I have ever had at a meetup or anywhere else. I thought they did a great job and I would be willing to pay a couple of dollars more too. Thanks Jennifer.

SORRY ABOUT THE NO SHOW SUDDEN EMERGENCY DEATH IN THE FAMILY

    February 13, 2013

    • Jennifer G.

Patti, I am so very, very sorry. You have my sincere condolences. (I think it was on Monday that you changed your RSVP to "no," which wasn't the last minute anyway.) I'm just so sorry for your loss, and am wishing you comfort in this sad time.

      February 13, 2013

  • Gary S.

There may be some tweaking....I mean I brought a paper plate for Pete sakes but thanks to Jenn I was properly educated and won't make that mistake again.
They obviously did the Buffett to accommodate us because normally they make it to order. But there was plenty if food. When i asked if i could get seconds after i saw nobody on line there was like 1 thing empty and plenty of other stuff protein wise plus the staples. There was plenty of food for everyone. There was even food to go home with. There is always room for improvement with anything and you cant always make everyone happy but the spirit of eating consciously and being vegan was accomplished successfully and enjoyably. And I look forward to the next one. Kudos to Jenn.

(continued) I need folks to know that their RSVP at the RSVP deadline is what I expect from them. As events become more popular, and there's limited space, no-shows also aren't fair to people on the waiting list. So prepaying, to reserve your spot, may be necessary for more of these gatherings. (Sorry for going on so long, and for posting so many of these comments—but this is the first time there's been so much feedback & discussion after an event, and I really appreciate all of it! I want the meetup group to run well and be responsive to people's needs, and I'm very glad to be hearing back from so many of you about what went well, and what you think can be improved.)

      February 12, 2013

    • Ted B.

      Let's just prepay.

      February 12, 2013

  • Karen N.

So with 32 people having attended, and all these comments, how come only 12 have responded to Jennifer's posted "pick your 3 fav. things" ??? I don't understand comments about "something not left by the time I got to buffet" I was one of first on line and got salad and spring rolls and sat down, enjoyed this, then only went back when there was no line, and still something in each tray, including spring rolls, so I had another! My only complaint was that food was, at best, lukewarm, and I wish there was a way to keep it hot longer.

Great, we have a team effort. By the number of trays they had, it looks like we need quite a few chafers. I have two large 8-qt ones - one commercial and one economy. I think they can be had for like $15-20 each at the dollar store or Walmart, but we probably need at least 4-5 more, most with two smaller half-size pans like this: http://bit.ly/YptdAo

      February 12, 2013

    • Ted B.

Or we can see if the restaurant has access to any for us. :-)

      February 12, 2013

  • Julie

Just as an added point, Karen, you wrote "something left in each tray." True enough, but that something did not include the soy chicken or beef that comprised the course. What was left in each tray were the vegetables, the other stuff having been apparently picked out.

...as I said, I'm sorry, but as a "veg" person maybe my observations were wrong, I'M SORRY I VOICED AN OPINION!!! PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!!

      February 11, 2013

    • Jennifer G.

Karen, all's well. I think Julie got your point, and it was good of you to clarify what you meant. Thank you. Actually, this reminds me to remind everyone: this medium of communication does have its limits. When we're reading words on a screen, we lack the other cues we normally get in conversation, like tone of voice & body language. I hope nobody is upset with anybody else, but folks are welcome to call me [masked]) if they are. Let's not escalate anything here, please. Peace and good night to all. xoxo

Jen, you did a great job! Having worked in the food industry for over 25 years it's very difficult pleasing everyone! Kudos to you!

    2 · February 11, 2013

  • Josh O.

I have no complaint about the no-shows and its impact on price. I have rarely gone out to eat and found prices so low.

    1 · February 11, 2013

  • Josh O.

This was my first meetup with Vegan Long Island so I was not aware of how active a discussion there is that follows each event. Sorry for taking so long to respond.

First, I am blown away by what Jenn has put together. My hat's off to all those who put this event together. My three favorites were steamed broccoli and veggie chicken, mango chicken and the salad. I found an abundance of food and was full when I left for home. I'm not in love with faux meats. I don't love loud places that for me discourage conversation as I don't like working to hear and be heard. There were many people I would have loved chatting with and that got in the way. I was impressed with the decor that was spare, artistically pleasing and tasteful, and spotless. All of the employees were very pleasant.

I enjoyed the dinner. Had seconds on the rice. A nice place to catch a quick meal.

    February 10, 2013

  • Gary F.

It is hard to please everyone. They did try. We'll adjust. And then, there is always the made to order route at the counter. You can get exactly what you want that way. To do that, I would think that you should not RSVP to the event, (inform the organizer of your intention) but simply show up, order your own stuff, enjoy it the way you like it and the vegan company.

    February 10, 2013

  • Julie

My comment about no food in some trays stands. We waited until the line was finished to go up to the table. Perhaps you went up for seconds before we got there. I voted in the survey, to the best of my ability since I couldn't comment on what was not available.

    February 10, 2013

  • Mary A.

of course, we know the obvious. eliminate the white rice, significantly reduce salad. otherwise, everything was amazing!i'm having a difficult time choosing my favorite. i is probably a toss up between general tso chicken and curry chicken. i can tell you that i brought dinners home for my guys and they went wild over the curry. can't wait to go back. i do wish they would hire a dishwasher and reduce the amount of plastics in-house.

    1 · February 10, 2013

  • Julie

I loved the food, however, there was no steamed food or curry chicken left by the time I got on line. I would suggest less salad and white rice and more regular food. Also, in a buffet situation, people should be aware of portion control until everyone is served. I enjoyed the conversation and the atmosphere. Looking forward to returning in the near future.

    • Jennifer G.

Julie, thank you for your feedback—you're absolutely right! I'm so sorry there was none of those entrees left for you, and I regret not alerting everyone beforehand to be mindful of the need to leave enough for others. Will be sure to do so next time; that, along with a larger quantity of the most popular entrees, should prevent disappointment in the future, I hope. And yes, we'll have only brown rice next time, and adjust the salad accordingly.

I agree. We would have liked more oil free dishes too. I almost want to say what about if it was just a couple steamed vegetable selections, a couple of soy proteins (steamed and fried) and then a whole bunch of different sauces? Just an idea. We eat fake meat VERY rarely so we would have liked more veggies :)

I noticed that the event is closed but marked as two spots available?. I know it is last minute but I was looking to attend if the seating can be stretched.

    February 7, 2013

Yes, Ephraim—please come, because a couple of folks have had to cancel last-minute! Look forward to seeing you. I'll add you to the list!

      February 7, 2013

    • Jennifer G.

("RSVPs closed" means that the deadline for RSVPing has passed already. There's usually a deadline for RSVPing because restaurants need a headcount in advance. If an event fills up before the deadline, then you'd see "0 spots left" and you could place your name on the waiting list.)

I got feedback from a couple of members who want to avoid oil and want to make sure there'll be plenty of vegetables, so I asked Steven if he could accommodate us. It was no problem. :)
