for the nontheists among us: Vegan Potluck & Atheist Comedy

Posted by Jennifer G.  This joint VLI/LIA meetup is being organized by Ted, and hosted by LIA member Dean at his home.

VLIers are invited to join members of Long Island Atheists Meetup for a vegan potluck, and two hours of the best irreverent atheist comedy on video that we can find, with an intermission.

Youre encouraged to bring a vegan dish or drinks to share (enough to feed 6 should be good, no hard liquor please). Please POST your dish so we don't all bring chips and salsa. ;-)

If you're unsure whether your dish or drink is vegan, just post your question here, ask me (Ted) privately, or check on Google. Here's a pretty comprehensive list of vegan alcohol:
http://www.barnivore.com/
You can load that up on your smartphone right from the liquor store, or try any of these mobile apps which use the Barnivore data: http://www.barnivore.com/mobile

On the comedy lineup:

George Carlin, Jim Jefferies, Seth MacFarlane, Bill Maher, Eugene Mirman, David Cross, Ricky Gervais,  Greg Giraldo, Patton Oswalt, Hannibal Buress, Jim Gaffigan, Anthony Jeselnik, Tim Minchin.

*** This comedy is NOT politically correct or rated PG. It is OFFENSIVE. Bring your cursing caps and strap in. ***

Please be mindful of VLI's RSVP/no show policy (here: www.meetup.com/Vegan-Long-Island/about/). If your RSVP is yes, please come! If you change your mind, please change your RSVP to NO so others can come. Space is limited so it's not fair to save a spot for an empty chair.

    Very nice people.

Sorry I missed it. I was physically and emotionally exhausted from my first TNR (as in Trap-Neuter-Return) trapping. Anyone interested in an adoptable calico? I can't bear to put her out again when she heals and I already have 3 and one diabetic foster.

Even though there were some glitches, a wonderful time was had by all. The food was great, the company was better. A beautiful home with lovely hosts made the evening perfect. Ted, hopefully we can do it all again soon. We can all use a few laughs!

      Agreed Mare!

Does anyone have a reasonably fast Windows laptop you might be able to bring to the event tonight for rendering part 2 of the comedy video? It would really help. It does need to be Windows, not a Mac, since my video editing software and the project file is for Windows only.

    • Claudia

Sorry -- Can't make it tonight; ended up having to take/pick up my Dad at funeral home for his friend that passed away. Hope to catch the next one!

      February 16, 2013

    • Ted B.

No problem Glitter. Sorry to hear about your dad and his friend.

Thank you all for coming last night. The food was great, the company was great. The video compilation was a disaster. I'm sorry folks. I tried. I have never used an Apple TV and didn't anticipate how complicated it would be to get my video onto the screen. I promise I'll get these issues worked out next time.

Cool place & great hosts- I felt like I was inside a Museum! Hopefully more comedy next time, otherwise I'll have to think of more stories to tell, LOL!

Since there are still 5 available spots for this event in the Long Island Atheists group but there is such a high demand here, I'm opening 2 more here. So we have room for three more folks if anyone wants to bring a friend or two. :-)

  • Heidi C.

bummer, looks like we won't be able to make it tonight after all because I got called in to cover a shift at work last minute. sorry for last minute change. Hopefully this leaves enough time to open a spot for someone else to go.

    February 16, 2013

    • Ted B.

Heidi, no worries. I'm sorry you can't make it tonight. We will probably repeat the event if it goes well. :-)

It's full! Maybe next time ..that's what I get for contemplating...it would've have been my first time :)

    February 10, 2013

    • Ted B.

Ivette - please join the open waiting list!
Since this event is happening in two meetup groups, it's quite possible and likely that the other one will not fill up. In that case, it'll open more spots here. :-)

Looks like we don't have anyone bringing drinks yet! Anyone want to bring a vegan alcoholic beverage?

    January 27, 2013

    • Chris M.

Julie, as a beer self-professed beer connoisseur, I wish to emphasize that most beers are vegan. There is a comprehensive list by brand of vegan beers online, and I once examined it thoroughly--looking for beers and different styles I'd normally drink. Like the article said, cask ales (which I don't care for, and unless you're a hard core beer officianado (sp?), you've probably never had and will not come across) are less likely to be vegan, as are milk stouts (duh! But oatmeal stouts, as well as nitro stouts, typically are vegan).

      February 10, 2013

    • Chris M.

So unless you're drinking cask ales or milk stouts, or are otherwise drinking some unusual type of beer, odds are it's vegan. Of course, if you're strictly monitoring beers and want to be extra sure, you should seek out the list I mentioned and check.

Are there still spots with the new date, I'd like to reserve a spot for me and a guest if possible. Thank you.

    1 · February 9, 2013

    • Ted B.

Heidi, looks like we do have 2 spots still open now. I sent ya email about it. :-)

      February 10, 2013

  • Claudia

    Hey Ted,
Judging by weather reports, this is not looking good for Saturday either, eh? Any thoughts for postponement, given possible good graces of "Dean's Sanctuary"??

    1 · February 8, 2013

    • Claudia

Yes--I realized the change email after I responded due to loss of internet--had flood of emails so missed the sequence. Sorry for the confusion--with luck, see you on 2/16!! Thanks for all of your work on this!

      1 · February 9, 2013

    • Ted B.

Fantastic. Thanks Claudia, looking forward to seeing you there!

      February 9, 2013

  • Heidi C.

will also have my 10 month old baby if that's o.k.

    February 9, 2013

  • Chris M.

Have another Meetup I'm organizing; would otherwise love to be there!

    February 8, 2013

  • Max K.

With the date change I'd like to go, but I don't want to take the spot of someone who was previously signed up to go and cancelled because of the weather. So I guess I will wait a day or two?

    1 · February 7, 2013

    • Ted B.

Max, there will be plenty of space. Now there are 6 spots open, with a waiting list also available if those fill up. More than likely, just as many folks who cannot go now due to the change, will now be able to go - just like yourself. I'd encourage you to reserve a spot. :-)

      February 7, 2013

  • Ted B.

Sorry for all the emails, folks. I didn't anticipate the bad weather. We are rescheduling the event.

Does this Saturday 5pm work for you?

PS: I've been notified that hard liquor won't be permitted, but if you were going to bring drinks, vegan beer or wine is fine!

    February 7, 2013

  • Paula

I think it's best to cancel it

    February 7, 2013

  • Paul-Michael

I may try to make it, depending on roads & traffic.

    February 7, 2013

  • Mary A.

sorry but with the weather report changing rapidly i would rather bow out gracefully now than pull a "no show." sorry. next time.

Will bring my predictable but still good curry chickpea salad, or maybe I'll get more adventurous ...

It sounds awesome to me, Paula!

      January 27, 2013

  • Claudia

I'll bring jalapeno hummus & pea sprout wraps! Thanks for this idea, and your hard work assembling the video, Ted!!

    1 · January 19, 2013

  • Paula

    Ted -- It's a cool idea nevertheless.

    January 17, 2013

  • Paula

Ah just read it fully and see it's videos ... that's fine!

    January 16, 2013

    • Ted B.

I was originally going to call it "atheist comedy video night" but it was too many words and I thought just videos might push people away so they wouldn't even read about it.

      January 17, 2013

  • Mary A.

wild rice dish and banana bread for dessert

    January 17, 2013

  • Paula

    (just one guest)

    January 16, 2013

  • Chris M.

I'll bring a vegetable dish from the deli at Whole Foods.
