How did you learn about Vegan Long Island—did you find us through Meetup.com? Via Facebook? Through a friend? Did you hear about us at an event? Maybe you spotted a VEGAN button on a friendly stranger, and you struck up a conversation!

Curious about VLI's history? Years ago, Amie Hamlin founded Club VEG, and started the monthly vegan dinners at Curry Club in Setauket. Amie was the catalyst for me going vegan. In 2008, I started up the Bellport Vegan Meetup. But I didn't find many vegans in Bellport, so I named the group to include a wider area: Suffolk Vegan Smorgasbord. Meanwhile, Christine Santos had founded Long Island Vegan Community. She passed it on to Michael Krimsky. In 2009, Michael was getting ready to relocate from Long Island. We decided to merge our memberships—and VLI was born.

What's your present diet like? (We appreciate that today you may be just vegan-curious, and we're happy to have you sign up—because every vegan meal is a positive step! We ask that everyone be open to new things & always treat others with kindness.)

I'm vegan now. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made!

I'm a healthy, happy vegan. The evidence indicates that most people thrive on a healthy, B12-fortified plant-sourced diet. But I hope EVERYONE will respond with compassion if you ever meet someone who is thinking about going back to a non-vegan diet. We love hearing your top reason(s) for choosing vegan food/vegan living:

For me, living this way is participation in a justice movement. It's conscientious objection to the deliberate exploitation of sentient beings. It's also a far more efficient way to feed the billions of us humans who are living on this planet. And widespread adoption of a vegan diet will also buy precious time for us to save the climate.
