Please share what kind of information or experience led you to first consider changing your diet?

I went vegetarian at the age of 12 out of a self-motivated love for animals. 6 years ago I moved from NYC to NC and something about the environment and beauty of the state made me take a long look at my own life and why I was vegetarian. I realized I was holding myself back for no good reason. My husband went vegan with me and our two dogs and toddler are vegan. I do this for the animals first and the health is an added bonus. I should also note my husband was raised on a pig farm and the fact that he only tells me the gruesome details when I push him is sign enough the compassionate life is the right life. He has seen it from the inside out and he is vegan so to me that is a huge message to those who aren't vegan and haven't looked into where their food is coming from.

Vegan Carolina is predominantly an outreach-based group. Which cities/regions of North Carolina are you interested in helping with leafleting/outreach?

I am interested in leafleting in the Durham/Chapel Hill area and surrounding areas.

What types of outreach do you prefer to engage in?

I usually try to focus on food as a motivator first. I'm very healthy and feel my family is a great representation of how amazing being on a vegan diet is for your body and mind. I'm animal welfare first but I've noticed many people are drawn in first by the food and health aspect so I often discuss that with friends, family and the public. I try to show everyone who questions veganism that you can have it all (delicious desserts, breakfast, snacks, mains) and help animals. I run two blogs-one is about animal rescue and promotes my chocolate ebook with profits donated to a different animal rescue facility each year (this year it is Maryland's Wildlife Rescue, Inc's deer sterilization project). My other blog is to promote shelter pets by showing the wide variety of pets that have been adopted.

Hi, my name is Sara. I went vegetarian at 12 years of age and vegan 6 years ago after reevaluating why I wasn't eating meat. I used to work in advertising for 5 years but left a year ago to be a stay at home mom to my toddler.
