Dear Vegan Lifers and Friends,

Firstly, we would like to welcome all of our new members to A Vegan Life (AVL)! We are growing so fast that it's difficult to personally greet each of you when you join, but please know that we welcome each of you to the AVL family and look forward to getting to know you all. Thank you to ALL of our community members for joining the family!

We don't know if you noticed that we have started using a small refundable reservation fee for important "free admission" events that require a specific count of attendees, such as lectures and restaurant outings. Check the link below to see what we are referring to. This Vegan OutReach Founder brunch event is FREE for your enjoyment (except for your personal food/drink orders), but we reserved a room for the event.

For events like these we simply can't have no-shows when a venue is preparing for a certain number of us. At our very first brunch event at this location we had 26 RSVPs, but sadly only 13 folks showed up. A while later one of our members put on a special Ask A Vegan event at his office. He stayed late, took his time to plan, and provided snacks. Over half of the folks who signed up didn't show up. It is simply not right to do this to the hosts, venue, servers, speakers, or organizers, who work hard to create and host events.

Our organizers volunteer their time and energy to find, plan, post, and show up at events for our organization. We hope you all understand the need and don't mind the refundable reservation fees. Please don't think this is some kind of punishment, because I assure you it isn't. Trust me, posting, keeping track, and refunding the fees is a lot of extra work for us so we wouldn't do it if it weren't absolutely necessary. Also, we hope you don't mind when these special and wonderful events cost you 50 cents, in order to not cost our nonprofit sponsors the PayPal fee. Our nonprofit can't exist without funds so the last thing we want to do is use its limited funds for these small fees. When they fall upon one account, they add can add up fast. Our nonprofit sponsor already makes this group free for members to join and that is such a gift and privilege.

If you ever prefer to send a check for "pay in advance" or "refundable reservation fee" events because you don't like to pay online, or in order to save the PayPal fees (although stamps and envelopes will cost at least that much depending on the event cost), please let let me know. They will need to be mailed at least 4 days in advance of event RSVP deadlines.

We volunteer organizers want to continue to provide quality and fun events for all of us so we hope you understand and are ok with this new policy. Again, it will only happen for events with limited seating and/or a need for close counts of attendees.

Lastly, as our community grows larger we have more events and more information exchanges between members so of course this will all mean more email will be generated by the group. This is a great thing because it means that our compassionate, healthy community is growing! That said, if you are one who prefers less email and don't mind checking the site for updates, please update your email controls. Only you can do this for yourself.
