Brownstone Tanks & Petroglyphs

The weather is gettin warmer and many people are going out for hiking these days.
I saw many hikers are on the waiting list of April 29th Sunday. So, I have decided to lead a hike on this day. (instead of hogging the spot on Blanch's hike)
But since I will go to Mt. Wilson on the day before, I want to make this hike bit easier. Yes, only a bit easier. Not very easier.

We are going to Brownstone Tanks located on the north side of Turtle Head Peak.
There are couple of dams. Cattlemen built it to supply water for livestock long time ago.
Also, there are some beautiful Native American Petroglyphs at there.
Used to many people drive down and hiked around there. But since BLM shut down the access road, there are no easy access to go up there and not many hikers can visit there.
Its a very nice place to visit. Lets listen to the sounds of the desert and contemplate the lives of the Indians and cowboys who lived in this land long ago.

Its about 10 miles round trip and about 2,500 ft total elevation gain. Mostly class 1-2 and some class 3 scramble spots. No major exposure, but couple of minor one.
Yes. It is NOT an easy hike even I said 'bit easier'. It is not a beginners hike.
10 miles and 2,500 ft elevation gain is much harder than standard Turtle Head Peak hike. But fortunately, there are no nasty steep hill climb on this hike.

Bring lots of water, food/snacks, cap/hat, sunglass, sunscreen, jacket, rain gear(poncho) and gloves. Trekking Pole will helps you since this is a long hike.

Let's meet at Kraft Mt. Trailhead at 9:00AM.
How to get Trailhead:
Drive Charleston Blvd to the west and pass 215 beltway. Keep driving for another 3.8 miles and you will see 'Red Springs / Calico Basin Drive' sign on your right. (If you see Red Rock Canyon scenic Drive Entrance, you came too far)
Turn right at Calico Basin Drive and go all the way down to the end (about 1.9 miles from turn out).

Stats:
Hike: Brownstone Tanks & Petroglyphs
Trailhead: Calico Basin Kraft Mt. Trailhead
Distance: about 10 miles
Hike Pace: Moderate (1.5 - 2 mph)
Total Elevation gain: 2,500 feet
Time: 5 to 6 hours
Difficulty: 3 (Intermediate)
Scrambling: 2 -3

No Kids, No Dogs and No Gekkos but GEICO is OK!

It was a nice Sunday hike. My painting on the rock, building the dam, curving the boulder finally paid off. Sorry, I just forgot to pour water in the lower tank.

Good workout, some real interesting views and contrasting landscapes. I can't believe how good of a job Shin did painting all the rocks, building dams, drawing pictures, and putting all the rocks in the right places. He sure is swell!
