Goldstrike Hot Springs for Hot Slowpokes

Difficulty: 3 of 5
Distance: 5 miles
Elevation Change: -800 feet
Scrambling: 2/3/4 of 5
Pace: 2 of 5
Goal: 6.5 hours
Danger: 3 of 5

Hazards: Fear factor, slippery rocks, sting bush, tarantulas, naked people.

Bring: 3 liters of water (or double your usual; hotsprings are very dehydrating!) You'll burn lots of calories, so pack good snacks. You'll also benefit from a hat and sunscreen, perhaps gloves to avoid sharp rocks on the rougher scrambles. Wear a swimsuit or trunks under your gear, and shoes you can change into for the water. You might want a small towel and dry clothes, though I don't mind walking out wet. No children, and no dogs please.

Carpool at the Fiesta Henderson sign at 10am, get on the road by 10:15, start hiking by 11am. Home around 6:00?

Trailhead: Before Hoover Dam, half-mile past the Hacienda Hotel in Boulder City, turn right onto the dirt road. After going under the bridge, turn left and drive down to the end.

We'll hike through a picturesque slot canyon with towering walls on each side and then soak in several hot springs pools and waterfalls. This event is for soaking only, but advanced hikers can go all the way down to the river. Either way, you need to save more than half your energy to get back out, the gravel wash makes for quite a workout.

The hike is less than three miles each way and requires climbing down (and up) several massive boulders. You may be intimidated by some of the obstacles we will encounter but we'll move at a slow, systematic pace to ensure everyone gets through safely. It's normal to be scared at first, but you must be able to act through your fear. Ropes are attached in some of the more challenging places as an added measure of safety, but serious injury is a possibility.

This hike is good for moderate and advanced hikers who are patient for a leisurely pace. We'll keep it moving, but it's very important there's a top and bottom helper at every big obstacle, to make sure everyone safely gets through. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody rushes ahead, capiche? If you want to hike faster or leave early, pick a faster leader or go on your own. tongue For me, this one is doable but scary, super fun, and in the top range of my ability.

If you end up on the Waiting List, plan on a spot opening up; we get a lot of drop-outs and no-shows.

Dinner and drinks will be at Eldorado at 140 Water Street, Henderson, NV 89015. They have a tasty turkey dinner for $7. ^_^ From Fiesta, turn right/East onto Lake Mead, and then right/South onto Water St a mile down.

Happy Hikers ...
  • Leave no trace. No trash, no food, no pet waste. Minimize your impact by staying on marked trails, no shortcuts or cutting switchbacks. Take nothing but photos.
  • In a group, hike single file or stick to the right half of a wide trail. Yield to faster or smaller groups. Uphill hikers should be given the right of way as they are working harder. Whenever you pause, move off to the side so there's room to pass.
  • Greet people you meet. Feel free to invite them to join our group.
  • Plan on drinking 16 oz. of water per hour. Even if you're not thirsty, you should be hydrating. You don't feel the water loss until its too late; your body is working hard!
  • Avoid cramps, fatigue and wobbles with drinks and snacks that target electrolytes and potassium (ex: Banana, Clif Shot, Gatorade, Emergen-C, etc.)
  • Even on cloudy days, the sun is damaging your skin. Sunblock is essential, hats are terrific.
  • Carpool when possible. It's good for your wallet and the environment. It's also kind to avoid maxing out the parking spaces. Tip your driver.
  • RSVP with integrity. YES means YES. You are holding a spot someone else wanted. We have a serious problem with no-shows. crying
  • The $1 for me is always optional and extremely appreciated. Hiking is free, but our group has to pay Meetup.com for the site. We also spend hours to plan, write, post, and follow up on events. We answer emails, phone calls, and texts. We're happy to teach you new trails and techniques, and build a community that's safe and friendly. Personally, I use my tips to stock the first aid kit I bring to every hike, along with extra energy drinks and snacks for y'all. I volunteer out of love, but I sure can post a lot more when my time and expenses are covered! tongue

Don't forget to pack good snacks or a lunch -- unlike your stepdad's hot tub, you ARE allowed to eat in this water ... though I wouldn't eat THE water unless you're willing to find out if there's a risk of meningoencephalitis around here. I've been under the water myself and felt fine, but do what we say and not what we do, right?

The weather's going to be in the high 80's, so dress light and wear tons of sunblock (and a hat if you're sexy!) You also need to DOUBLE whatever water you planned on bringing; hot springs are surprisingly dehydrating.

I kept my face above the water this time, but I've been reading more about the amoeba infections that are possible at hotsprings. Less than 100 people have died from the illness since discovered 25 years ago (and only 1 in Nevada) so I'm not worried. The cave you dive to is too fun, so what - a little diarrhea? Spinal and brain lesions? ;-) But read more about amoeba sickness and decide for your own safety: http://www.birdandhike.com/Hike/LAME/Goldstrike/Naegleria...

OMG I made it all the way to the river! It felt sooo good to sit along the edge where the hot spring water meets the cold river water - as it flowed in and out with the current, it mixed to a perfect middle between blessed hot and way too #$%& cold! A few of us swam out to try and see the dam, but the water was arctic out there, my feet ached they were so frozen. It was totally fun and the ropes/boulders were just as hard as I imagined ... but I put on my big girl panties! However, I was the WALKING DEAD going home, geez! Thanks as always to my fellow slowpokes who were super patient for me, and the many people who lended hands, shoulders, and cheers for everyone to get down and up safely... minus one small cut, several bruised thighs, and borderline heat exhaustion. ;-) Bob, thanks for being a co-leader. Chris, thanks for scouting ahead and helping on boulders. Sean, you were a terrific sweeper. John, you're my new favorite - thanks for pulling me up the big'uns! Lisa, we'll miss you!
