8TH ANNUAL GOLD POINT GHOST TOWN MEMORIAL DAZE 2009
Please also see www.goldpointghosttown.com for photos of prior year's events. Go down the page to the "special events" section and you will see that many of the photos are of our group!
This trip is a blast! I can guarantee it'll be one of your all time favorites! The weekend consists of tent camping Friday or Saturday - Monday. Memorial Day flag ceremony, music daily from morning till night, delicious food for breakfast, lunch & dinner each day with proceeds going to the volunteer fire department and the building refurbishing fund, chili cook-off, Dutch oven stew cook- off, etc. Too much fun to mention!
Gold Point is about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas. Some of us will be leaving Vegas Friday after work. There will be others leaving Saturday morning. Even if you can't come up until Saturday night or Sunday morning, it's still worth the drive! I will give good driving directions later in this post so feel free to come up whenever you like. The event ends after breakfast on Monday.
Sheriff Stone (he's not really a Sheriff but when you own most of the town you can call yourself whatever you want) will be cooking for us. He is an excellent cook. Friday dinner is available from 5-7pm ($5.50 for burgers & fries). Saturday breakfast from 8-10am ($6.50 for usually eggs, pancakes, potatoes with onions and peppers, bacon, sausage, orange juice and coffee). Saturday lunch at 1pm ($5.00 for Dutch oven stew contest). Dinner Saturday 5-7pm ($13 for usually steak, fries, green beans, corn, and 1 drink token to be used for soda, beer, or mixed drink). Breakfast again Sunday 8am-10am ($6.50). Lunch Sunday at 1pm ($5) will be the chili cook-off. Dinner again on Sunday from 5-7pm ($13), and breakfast again on Monday ($6.50). The food is delicious. Take my word for it. When else can you go camping and not have to bring a bunch of food? There will also be vegetarian entrees available for those of you who have special food needs. (Please specify such in your RSVP to me so he can be sure and have enough.) **You may also bring your own food and cook for yourself at our campsite if you wish**
Drinks are available for purchase at the saloon OR YOU MAY BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS INTO THE SALOON. $3 per beer, $5 for drinks with one shot, $6 top shelf, water bottles $1.00, soda $1.00 (I think).
There is no plumbing in Gold Point (population 9) but there are water tanks which supply running water to the saloon. There are outhouses. Bring your water for drinking, coffee at camp, etc. Sheriff Stone has ordered 2 port-a-potties and a washbasin to be placed at our camp site. A pink one for girls and a blue one for boys. I will collect $10.00 per ADULT (free for kids) to cover the campng / Port-a-Potty fees. Any extra $ will go to building restoration fund. We will have a campfire ring at our site so BRING SOME FIREWOOD and your chairs for bonding around the campfire when you're not hanging in the saloon listening to the bands. By the way, same bands as last year except for a classic rock band during the day instead of Maria (the singer). They were all great!
DIRECTIONS: (see map on www.goldpointghosttown.com in the directions section. Forget the part about Left at the Cottontail Ranch, it is no longer there.) Take 95 north to Beatty. Make a right turn at Beatty to stay on the 95. Go about 1 block and FILL YOUR TANK at the gas station there by the Candy store and Casino. This will be your last chance to get gas! Set your trip odometer and continue on this road 45-50 miles to the 266 which is about 15 miles past the Death Valley turn off. Make a left here at the 266. Continue 7 miles and make a left on 774. 8 more miles to Gold Point. No cell phone reception out there. When you get to town, go into the saloon and ask at the bar for the Hiking Group.
I'm not sure if there's an ATM in Beatty but there is NOT an ATM in Gold Point so bring cash from Vegas! (There are not stores in gold point. Bring everything you will need.)
You will need: $10.00 Camping / Port-a Potty fees payable to Kristen (any overage goes to Building Restoration Fund)

THIS IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY TOWN/TRIP! MAKE SURE YOU CAN BEHAVE YOURSELF AROUND CHILDREN! Dogs are not allowed in the saloon and there are several mines in the area so think twice before bringing your dog.
I'm glad you're going to join us again, Sondra. It just wouldn't be the same without you!!!!!!
I am going up Friday, if anyone planning to go then would like to carpool.
Hey lil sis

I'll be leaving Friday PM around 6:00, coming back Monday AM. Anyone available to carpool those times?
Kenny, you know the name of the town is GOLD Point, and not GOAT Point, right?
This is a joint meetup with 3 groups. Click the links to see who else you may know. 1) Rock Climbing http://www.meetup.com/Vegas
... 2) Camping http://www.meetup.com/SWSca

If you are planning on hiking with us in the Sierra on Saturday, bring some warm clothes.
I'm leaving early Saturday morning and returning Monday with a stop in Rhyolite if someone wants to ride.
Can't wait to see everyone's photos! There are 100 in the first album between me and a few others ~ it wouldn't let me upload any more, so I'm guessing that to add more photos, you would probably have to create another album.
Such an awesome time with everyone. It was sad to leave on Monday. Thanks to Kristen to organizing this event and opening it up to everyone. If you didn't go, you missed a great event. Also, thanks to Debbie G., Lisa, and Jim for having everything I didn't bring and letting the newbie girl use up all their stuff. Wookie, I miss you already. Zach, your crazy for leaving early. I'll be here again next year, hope to see everyone there again and hope to see some new faces.
