The High Sierra is my second favorite place after Red Rock Canyon. It's home to the big peaks: 14,000 feet. This is mountaineering at it's best! Lone Pine Peak is often mistaken for Mt. Whitney. It hovers over the town of Lone Pine, CA.
For almost 10 years now I have planned a trip to the Sierra over Labor Day weekend and this year is no exception. We will leave on Saturday (9-5) afternoon and drive to Lone Pine, CA (3.5 hours from Vegas). You can either camp or get a room at the Dow Villa Motel in the center of town.
On Sunday (9-6) we will form three groups: One group (6 hikers) will do the North Face of Lone Pine Peak, one of the best routes in the Sierra. It's 2,000 feet of class 3/4 scrambling on good rock to the 13,000 foot summit of Lone Pine Peak. The second group will take the class 2 chute to the summit. The third group will stay on the trail and hike to Meysan Lake, a beautiful tarn at 11,000 feet.
Unlike Mt. Whitney there will be no crowds and we do not need permits.
After the hike we will all meet at Pizza Factory across from the Dow Motel. It's a tradition for climbers and hikers to eat there after a big hike.
You are on your own on Monday (9-7).
All of these hikes are difficult. Even Meysan lake is comparable to Charleston Peak.

More info about the Sierra
I'm going to be driving but as yet haven't worked out how to spend the holiday Monday. Any ideas?
What's the scoop on camping? Will there be a group site or are we on our own?
Ok, does anyone want to share a motel room or have an extra bed in their room and would be willing to share? There seems to be one hotel available in Lone Pine - The Comfort Inn - at $159 a night. Am planning on staying only Saturday and heading home after the hike on Sunday. Anyone want/need to share?
All right, no joy on the motel room. Is anyone camping? Room for one more tent? Really don't like camping alone. Thanks!
I will drive up on early Saturday morning and find camp site. I found several Campsite near Lone Pine, but I really don't know its full or not. Anyway, I will hike to Meysan Lake on Saturday and hope to see you guys on Saturday night.
I will bring my backup GPS ( yes, I have 2 GPS ) and will put waypoint for both class 2 & 4 route waypoint for Lone Pine Peak. Anyone who lead the class 2 route can use this.
Thank you Branch for organizing and leading this Lone Pine Peak hike. Hiking in the Sierra is an adventure like no other and I'm glad I could be a part of this group of serious hikers. I love the climbing/ scrambling and the exposure :) The weather was perfect and the views were spectacular. I had a great time hiking with you and Adam, Shin, and Mark and Sha Jin!
